Nelson, the picture below is right a little more than half the collection. (Note: the carpet is brand new and not stained, not sure why it looks off color in the picture like that).

Nice!! Awesome Mantles

Before I ever starting to collect anything post war I had a list of five that "I'm never going to get these cards".

They were a 1968 Nolan Ryan rookie, 1953 Bowman Pee Wee Reese, 1953 Topps Satchell Paige, 1952 Bowman Willie Mays and 1949 Leaf Stan Musial.

Thanks to my wife as a birthday gift I was finally able to find the last of these five that I needed in a range I could afford and not look like it went through a washer machine.

So excited about this one as I have become quite a Musial fan over the last few years.

Amazing BestDj777 (Chris)
You never showed them to me before.
It makes me wanna take a group picture of ALL my Mantles as well.
Then again, i try using PhotoBucket and listed most of them in the B/S/T thread.
Bestdj777- that is an amazing pile...so envious on some of those. Maybe sometime down the road..i be getting my other 52 A RC variation.
I really like to have all mine by 1 TPG grader..probably all by SGC. Right now mine is all mis-match by BVG/PSA/SGC.

I just picked this one up from a Net54 member. Kind of a neat story goes with it, after we settled on price, he requested I donate the cash to an organization like the salvation army since we are in the season of giving. A nice gesture on his part for sure. Todd, the Salvation Army kettle got a little heavier yesterday. Thank you!

Ok...its not another Mantle. But a ALL-TIME great of mine, that i always wanted when i was growing up in Atlanta and watching the Braves.
He is a notch off my want list of RC's and a scratch off my 2014 colleting focus.

Thanks Chuck and Chris. Beautiful Aaron Chris. I know it is a long time coming, but it looks like it was definitely worth the wait.

Default 1966 Ryan

Chris - great pick-ups recently..

Regarding the Nolan Ryan, I tried to warn everyone...

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=179111

I'm sure there's a market for that card w/ Ryan set-collectors. Just make sure you sell yours soon before the other 4 hit the market (if you plan on selling).

Otherwise, love the Aaron RC!

i was the somewhat 'unlucky' bidder on this one..I thought it was unique and didnt really put much attention into it..So i placed a very mininal early bid....then find out days later...its nothing more than a magazine cut-out..buts holds some nominal value to PSA set collectors...so maybe all is not lost.
1966 Nolan Ryan The Sporting News pre-rookie ..needed for PSA registry now ,,,still fits into my RC collection somehow.

Beautiful Killer & Yogi, Matt!

My latest purchases for my registry sets: the Yount is an upgrade and the Thomas is speculative (I don't expect he'll get in on the 1st ballot, but just in case...) Just picked-up Dick & Sparky (love the colors on the '72s!) and it looks like I have three more managers to go after now!

I got this beauty in the mail today, part of the Roberto Clemente master set I'm building. I couldn't believe how nice it was once I got it in my hands. When the seller said it was mint, they weren't kidding. This is at least an 8.5, maybe a 9. It looks like it just came off the printing press yesterday, but it's 40 years old.

The surface is flawless, the corners and edges are sharp, and the centering is magnificent.

This will look really good in a SGC holder.

I have been looking for the Mantle/Mays/Maris for a long time and it finally came up for sale as part of a set of what I thought would be all duplicates of stuff I already have. Fortunately, the seller included the color photo, which I have never seen before, and one of the other postcards ended up being a variation that I was previously unaware of. All in all a good purchase.

nice pick up Chris on that Mantle...i actually saw that last night and was gonna put in a bid, i felt it looked 'strong' went higher than a previous same one.
It was one of those oddball items, that i normally would of got, but passed on.

I got my Greg Businennau lots in just today and got my Hank Aarron RC a few days ago.

Very nice! That card is a bitch to find centered, too. Let me guess, though... the back is fairly OC. Pretty much every '73 Clemente I've seen has an OC back, regardless of grade (likely due to sheet placement, I suppose). Sweet card.

Feel free to let us know how it grades out...

Nice pickup Zach. Love that issue, and I think the price will only be going up as PSA expands its grading to magazine cut outs.

Chuck, ya the back is quite off center. Here's a pic from the auction.

I spent some time looking for one with centering on the front and back, but it only needs to be 90/10 on the back to not affect the overall score. When I send it in to SGC, I'll report back on what it got.

A couple more for the Lou Brock collection. The Red Barn is a variation, there is usually an address just above the "Make your own Sundae" and below the red area. The Big K Mart I think is mid to late 80's. I worked at Kmart during that time, and I think that is when they went to the Big K Marts to try and compete with Wal Mart.

If you rated on a scale from 1 to 10 how tough it is to find a particular card centered, the 1972 Mays In Action would rate a 17. It is impossible to find...until now!!! Woo hoo!! Paid a pretty penny for it, but man am I psyched!!

And for my fellow v & e collectors, I added another 1969 white letter variation, got a great deal on a 1971 Nash 'blob' version in beautiful shape and traded on this board for the 1959 Giallombardo 'no optioned statement' variation (thanks David!). It was a good day.

Spelling "Yastrzemski" correctly without needing to look it up since the 1980s.

Fairly new to collecting Vintage, although I have always circled it with desire. Won't be quite the swath/breadth some on here employ. Glad I found this site. Very knowledgeable. I did pick up this '56 Mantle to start.

I would love to hear opinions on what grade it might garner.

Hi Corey,

Great pickup. I would say a 3(mk), but always hard to tell what anything will get, particularly when it is something that will require qualifiers.

Alright...this card is not that exciting or earth shattering...but it represents my deep dive into a new set, 1967 Topps. This is my first High Series card...I ended up getting 7 more, all commons, but heading into the abyss. Lol. When I was a kid I had a NM Brooks Robinson that I about fell off the school bus when I first discovered it's worth in the old Beckett handbook...I wish I had that card right now!! Coming soon I suppose....

Wish me luck!

Thank you both for your responses. What effect does the MK qualifier have post grading? I believe I read that an OC qualifer basically has the effect of siphoning up to 2 points off a grade. I guess if I think about it, it depends on where the mark is and to what extent. Just curious what effects the MK and OC qualifiers generally have on a grade.

Another ridiculously tough card to find in nice shape AND centered.

The MK qualifier would have the same effect in most collectors' eyes (ie. a 2 grade deduction). This 2 point deduction became the hobby standard mainly due to PSA's set registry, as that's how they "scored" cards with qualifiers.

Still, like you said, when it comes time for someone to pay for a card, the price reduction for a mark will often be affected by location and severity (pencil marks on the reverse not viewed as badly as marks on the front, etc.).

The mark on your Mantle in fairly unobtrusive (small and in the border), and I agree with the previous guesses about the card grading about a 3 MK. One of the nice things about your copy is the great centering.
