I'm still quite a ways away. Not counting upgrades, I'm at 56% complete. Still too far away for me to post a wantlist. With my luck, someone will have every card I need....and I won't have any money.

Well, working on an extreme budget every card I get that fills an empty hole is precious to me. these are the newest additions to my collection.

A couple weeks ago I was 12 cards away from finishing my 1970 set. Since then I acquired 8 from one person in a Facebook group, then I found this Ben Davidson on ebay, leaving me just 3 cards shy. Woohoo!

48 Bowmans I am pretty light on, so any I can pick up is a good day. Also, being a RAMS fan, getting the Waterfield RC is pretty sweet for me. This one actually presents itself better in person than scanned. That's OK though. This is a set I have to make some concessions on.

Nice pickups! I have a bunch of doubles of the '48 Bowman and '70 Topps set that are lower grade so if you PM me with a list I can probably help.

jeff

P.S. You don't need to apologize for the grade of cards you collect! I love hearing that people are still building sets one card at a time, in raw form, and just looking for an example to fill a hole. THAT's the way this hobby started and I still love it!

Thanks jeff! Looking through my 1970 set, I see numerous cards that are now "unsightly" (creased, tape remnants, etc...) compared to the rest of the set and stick out like sore thumbs. So, not only do I need to fill 3 holes, but also will be looking at some upgrades as well. I am going to try and re-evaluate the set this week sometime and see what I really need/want. Will pm you with a list when I get it. Bowmans I am not really ready to shop from a wantlist yet. Still need too many expensive cards and lot's of SP's.

Card by card..........I wouldn't have it any other way. Well, sometimes I do buy small lot's and pick out ones I need. Buying sets wouldn't be that expensive either, in most cases, but would take the fun out of the hunt and trading stories with others at shows and the like.

It's been a slow month for me as far as adding new cards.
Here are the latest additions to my collections. A trio of 1962 Topps. Nothing earth shattering, but it fills 3 holes and gets me that much closer to my goal.

I've had to reevaluate all of my sets and drop some cards, marked for upgrades, from my lists. My '62 set I dropped 20 cards from my upgrade list, all of them borderline "acceptable/upgradeable".

I have a 1950 Bowman set from my boyhood completely graded by SGC. In the past few months I have actually upgraded some of the original cards that I sent in just as they were when I bought & played w/ them. All in all I have upgraded about 25 cards so far.

Here are 2 I recvd last week:

I really like that Bednarik. Classic clean look of those cards is so nice and great eye appeal. I agree with Jeff and Tucker. Collecting is different things to different people, but just collecting the cards in any form is great. I have some pretty rough cards but some of them are my favorites. Good luck finishing your sets. I think I may have tracked down a nice Namath in a SGC holder that i will pick up at the National, so pretty excited about that. Will try to post picture when i get it.

Gotta agree with iowadoc, them are some nice looking Bowmans. And congrats on hanging on to your boyhood card collection, especially from 1950. I too have most of mine from my childhood, but they are much later (1969/70), and didn't fare nearly as well over the years. But what great times I had, as a kid, collecting them.

Love to see more of your '50 Bowmans.

Doc both are really nice. I hate jersey and bat cards but that cut of Bronko is really cool. I just picked up one of Dick Kazmaier.

That Jim Brown RC is much better centered than most of the ones I see. Very nice Nags cut too.

Love the 50 Bowmans. This is one of the most underrated sets to me (unfortunately overshadowed by 52 Bowman Large). Really nice aesthetically. The Ted Fritsch is one of my favorite backgrounds. I started picking these up when I first got back into the hobby, but I've sold most of them off as my goals/budget changed. Thanks for sharing - never get tired of seeing these.

And nice Grange - that one is on my wantlist. I think the 50 Tittle and 33 Grange would definitely make my all-time aesthetic list.

A rough original photo of Thorpe. It's not as nice as some of the other Thorpe pieces I've seen in this thread (and I would prefer a shot from his Carlisle days), but I'm glad to have it.

This was my sole pick-up from the June RMY auction. I stayed up until about 1 AM on sniper watch. When I woke up the next morning at 7:45, I went to check on what I thought would be the final results. In actuality the auction didn't even end until 8 AM. This is madness people, we need a truce on this late night/early morning bidding!

btw, The painted photo-art on the 1950 Bowman cards is awesome. They look great in high grade.

The look/artwork of Goudey is definitely competitive with Chicle, but I think Grange, Thorpe, and Rockne are the only football cards. The presence of Babe Ruth alone scares me off on that set.

Default Sport Kings

I agree with the challenge of the Sport Kings set. The Ruth cards go for a lot even in rough shape, as well as Ty Cobb. It would look nice, but I would find it monotonous to find a lot of the non-football and baseball athletes. The set would like quite nice when done.

My first pick up from a board member.

On my limited budget I usually have to be happy with getting a few cards at a time, here and there. Rarely do I get the opportunity to buy in "larger" quantities. But board member Mikehealer helped me out with doing just that. From him I acquired 26 1955 Bowman's, all in one shot. It doesn't get me close to finishing the set, but it does almost double the number of cards I now have.
I'm stoked!

Thanks Sam! Good luck on your as well. I had a small stack of duplicates that I accumulated after upgrading some of mine, but they all got stolen out of my antique mall showcase over a year ago. I was NOT happy that day.

I can't believe I've never really poked my nose into the football card forum. Some great stuff in here, guys. I have to pop in here more often, especially once I am able to start buying cards again in about another month or so. I have a nice checklist of cards I want to acquire, foremost among them the Joe Montana and Dan Marino rookie cards. I had them as a kid, and got rid of them because I was a dummy.

I look forward to posting in here soon, guys I have lots of vintage Packers to buy, too.

Keep up the great pickups, everybody!

I've been thinking about starting the 1964 Kahn's set for some time now. I couldn't pass up the chance to start it off strong with the quarterback from my hometown team.

Nice looking Tarkenton and love the looks of the 55 Bowman lot.

Just picked these two cards up from a local card show. Plan to send them in to get graded. The backs are very clean on both cards. Hope to get at least a 5 or better. Funny how you can go looking for baseball cards and end up with football cards.

The centering is what sold me. There were a couple of other cards in the about the same condition but the centering was off so I passed. Hopefully they will not come back as being altered. They don't appear to be but then again I am not an expert and this is the first time buying a raw grade bowman from the 50's. No matter how it turns out they both still look good to me and that is why I made the purchase.

This is one of those rare cases where I put in a bid on an auction thinking for sure I would lose and I actually won. I can't decide if I like the card... I looked at the black spots under magnification and it didn't tell me much - still don't know what they are - marker/paint? I bid on it because I thought the surface was relatively nice. Even some of the scratches that show in the scan are on the case (the case is well loved for sure - I think they may have played catch with it... while drinking). I guess the card is growing on me... I like the concept of picking up low grade cards that present decently, but then once I have them my OCD starts to pick them apart. Here it is:

Haven't had much time or money to buy anything lately, but I did recently make a decision to start dismantling my stamp collection to make some extra $$ to help me with my card collection. Got a couple small packages on the way and just got this in the mail today.
Not a very significant card, at least within the set, but is is significant to me because it's the last card I needed to complete my basic 1970 Topps set. I do still need a Calvin Hill black letter variation. And of course, like most of my sets, I also have a secondary list of cards I would like to upgrade at some time if the opportunity comes my way.

Here's a recent addition....low grade but the premiums are tough since you needed 5 of the same player I think not too mention eating 5 bags of chips!!! I get thirsty just thinking about it
