Default 1908 Rochester Postcard - Baseball

Posted By: Tim Dudley

My parents gave me an old postcard of the 1908 Rochester Baseball Team. The reason they had it was because one of the players pictured was a cousin and was one of the most successful athletes ever to come out of their area of Kentucky.

I am trying to find out more information about this postcard and what its value may be. I have some digital pictures of it that I will send to anyone that may be able to help. I would truly appreciate anyone that would take an interest in helping me out.

Thanks -

Tim

Not sure if he was there in 1912, but I believe this is the Rochester team from 1912

His name was Eros Bollivar "Cy" Barger. He was a pitcher and in June of 1910, he pitched Brooklyn to a 14-inning win over the Chicago Cubs. He also drove in all of the runs that day including the winning run. Here is the postcard in question.

Nice postcard...and one I've not seen before. Composite postcards of early minor league teams are highly desirable and usually go in the $200+ range especially for cards showing future and former major leaguers.

I'm sure you already know this, but your cousin has many prewar issue baseball cards.

I just recently purchased a 1911 T-205 Gold Border card of E.B. "Cy" Barger. There were two issued for that series of cards...one with a "full" B on his cap and one with only "half" of the B on his cap. I know he had a couple of other cards issued but I am not sure where I can find them. Any ideas as to where I can begin searching?

JC has four Rochesters, 1908 and 1909 on his wonderful website. I recall that I may have sold him one of them several years ago.

With all due respect to Dan (Hi Dan ) $400-$600 is closer to price on these in nice condition.

I know JC won't mind so here is the link to his Rochesters:

Thanks Again for the help and Merry Christmas,

I was just giving a low end estimate on minor league composite postcards....I believe a Superior, WI team card just sold on ebay for right around 300+...not long ago there was a Little Rock postcard with Tris Speaker that went for $900 IIRC and every once in a while you see one of the PCL composites go for $1,000+. Wasn't really trying to give a specific price on this Rochester as I have no clue what it would sell for on the open market...I just know it's more than $200.

Nice postcard.

Here's another Barger.

The 2007 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards lists this card at $40, with prices of $70 in ex condition and $200 in near mint. Barger is not one of the tougher cards in T207. You may find one on ebay with a little patience.

This is the only Barger card I have. I'm sure other forum members will chime in with other issues and scans.

Do you owe that Cy Barger card? I just saw a website that has 18 x 24 inch reproductions and that was one of the images. What else do you know about the card you displayed here?

Tim

...Don't mean to hijcak, but my mom's uncle and your cousin were pitchers together for a while...my gr-unc's name was Nap Rucker...Mr Barger and Mr Rucker both pitched for the same Dodgers staff(or Superbas,as they were known at the time)from 1910-1912. They were also around the same age...Small world.
Love the postcard!

Nap Rucker was a damn good baseball player and won 20 games at least once or twice if I recall. He was a top pitcher of his era and the best pitcher on some lousy Brooklyn teams of which he was the first or second best player (Zach Wheat being the other). I believe both Barger and Wheat played with Casey Stengal for a bit as well.
