All of these Star Co. cards posted are graded by some of the smaller grading companies? Why is that? Do the 2 big guys not grade Star for some reason?

Jason,

Certain Star issues were reprinted and I don't think PSA believes it can accurately tell which ones are reprints.

I read that the Star printing plates were stolen and the cards were reprinted in great quantities in the early 90s. Too bad, nice images

At one time PSA did grade them. SGC or BGS to my knowledge has never graded the cards.

SCD hired Steve Taft and Todd Crosner to authenticate Star Company cards when they started. Taft is an expert in the area and Crosner was a big California dealer who I believe bought out a majority of the Star Company inventory when it was offered for sale in the late 80's early 90's. When SCD (the original company) stopped grading cards Taft went to authenticate for GAI. Alan Hager also graded them for ASA and he did have a couple of pages written on how to spot counterfeit star company cards. Given his credibility in the hobby I doubt many people trust his grading but I always thought he was pretty good at grading other peoples cards. I think CSA used the same information as ASA to grade the Star Company cards.

Yes, the printing plates were re-used and SOME of the sets were re-produced. Unfortunately, the public perception is that everything was reprinted and hence the values dropped considerably. From my understanding not that many sets were reprinted.

I hope that eventually SGC and/or PSA will grade these cards and the market for them will be return to somewhere close to what it once was.

I loved those Star Co. cards. They were very colorful and very affordable compared to baseball. I'm not sure if there will ever be a market for them, though.

To a teenager growing up in Chicago (even the chubby, short, white ones!), there was no one more magical!

My graded MJ's...

Dumb question but most of the cards show up as an x on my computer. Anything I can do to make these turn into a card?

I should know this more definitively, given my round-on-the-edges shape, my Chicago upbringing, and my propensity to enjoy baked goods from that company...However!
I cannot recall for sure.
I seem to remember that they were in clear, sealed plastic wrappers and placed on the inside-bottom of donut boxes, but I am not sure.
This is one of those things that I didn't get to see first-hand at the time, because:
1) I didn't go grocery shopping
2) My Mom didn't care enough about me to make sure that she was in the stores first to beat out all the hoarders

Edited to add:
They are a neat over-sized piece to add to your collection...I should have put this over on the Bread-card thread, since they are definitely from a doughy source!

Jason, I imagined inside clear plastic in boxes, I've just never seen them. Do you know if they ever issued other sports? I love the brand (their goodies), however I guess I wasn't eating their donuts back then. They have an absoutely huge factory complex here on Long Island. In fact the street that goes by it is called Entemann Way, or Blvd., or something similar. I've got a notion to go rooting through their dumpsters...for cards, not dessert food.

I remember the first time I ever ate Entemann. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. They had the best chocolate cake I ever tasted. I forgot all
about them until this thread. I lived in Buffalo at the time and doubt I can find them here in Texas.

Entemann's products are available in most Kroger stores, even in Texas, although the variety available is not as extensive as you get in the northeast. (Chocolate covered doughnuts are still great!)

I would have thought Barry Sloate would have made a Seinfeld comment by now about digging dessert food out of the trash.
