Default Going back to my childhood

I mainly collect Pre War cards, T206 specifically. But recently I've felt the pull to go back and buy graded cards that I once owned as a kid. Cards from 1984 to about 1989. Rookies, stars, etc. Sandberg, Boggs, Mattingly, Canseco, Strawberry, Gooden. The greats when I was growing up. Anyone else do this? You can get some pretty good deals if you aren't looking for Gem Mint 10 cards. I'm ok with 8's and 9's on most of them.

Rich a think many collectors do this. I am a set collector but collecting modern sets is either very frustrating due to the short prints or a task in financial futility as many of the modern sets, especially the 80's and 90's sets are not worth much more than the best card in the set. I have started to collect just the best cards of these sets that I like and have left the commons alone.

I think you would be in good company by collecting the cards you wished you could afford as a child in 8's and 9's.

I did the same thing. I grew up in the 80's and 90's. While I do purchase the occasional modern pack, box, or single, I collect mainly vintage rookies and pre-war cards now. I have a small-ish budget, so it takes me awhile to save up. However, one day I realized that I have very few of the key rookie cards from my childhood!

So, as I do sometimes to collect funds for vintage, I sold off some of my modern inserts and "game-used" to purchase just about every "key" rookie card from the 1980's and 1990's. I tried mostly to avoid parallels (glossy, tiffany, refractors, etc.) Sure, it's not pre-war or vintage, but it represents my childhood and the stars of that era - and I enjoy looking at them!

So - with that being said - I'll share that with you all: (Sorry for the crappy scans - with resizing and all...)
