My allegiances changed when my favorite players left town.
I was a hardcore Maple Leafs fan until March 3, 1968, when they traded Frank Mahovlich to Detroit, so I instantly became a Red Wings supporter. Then on Jan. 3, 1971, Detroit swapped the Big M to Montreal, so overnight I became a Habs fan. My loyalty to Montreal cooled considerably 13 years later when the Canadiens basically forced the great Guy Lafleur to prematurely retire midway through the 1984-85 season, but the last straw was when they traded Patrick Roy to Colorado on Dec. 6, 1995. I have been an Avalanche fan ever since. Same thing in baseball. I loved the A's until New Year's Eve, 1974, when Catfish Hunter signed with the Yankees. Loved the Bombers ever since. |
