Default LOTG Fall 2023 Wins

Someone really wanted this Sisler, and I cannot blame them.

My lone win!

Let’s see yours!

Missed the T206 Titus Sovereign SGC 5.5, feel asleep watching the Fla/Fla St game. Not happy about it.

Picked up a pretty cool oddball piece. A 1912 World Series Magic Lantern Slide. Never seen something like it before.

Yeah that extended bidding process is a bit ridiculous IMHO.

Just this one for me. The 1916 1/1s were going a lot cheaper than the 1921s last night!

I saw that. Maybe because it was the plate specimen for the book?

I struck out on many items I was bidding on. I was on several of the Herpolsheimers but didn't knock any down. I think there was a feeding frenzy with the great auction marketing and Net54 work done by Steve. There will be another day on some of those.. Congrats to winners, consignors and the AH for a great auction.

The OJ’s were all higher than I thought most of them would go. The Ewing was an 1889 issue, so maybe that pose/year combo is much tougher than other years? Still a boatload of cash compared to less common HOF’ers. 3k+ for the trimmed O’Rourke was surprising as well.

Very excited to nab more of these. I am shooting to get a complete set of 9 featuring the Philly team’s schedules on the backs, but until then, I’ll grab them when I see them as I love the illustrations.

Yeah the price on that O'Rourke is baffling to me.

I won some items but I am superstitious about posting pick-ups before I have them in hand, so I will wait until the December pick-up thread to show the cards. I will say generically that it was one Old Judge proof cabinet, one Herpolsheimer's, and one Zeenut (and none of them were show-stoppers).

Great auction, but my one quibble is that after the midnight close and the 1 AM "any item that has not had a bid for an hour" close, I would prefer that the remaining items be on individual 15-minute clocks.

Basically, I wanted one (and only one) Herpolsheimer's and had qualified for five during the regular bidding (but was high bidder on none on the last day). At one point three were higher than I wanted to go, so I narrowed it down to two. I was high bidder on one at midnight but was topped after midnight, so I switched off to the other one and became high bidder on that. At 1:00 the other three closed, so only these two were left for me to bid on. By 2:00 nothing more had happened, so I put a max bid on the one I has high bidder on and went to sleep. It was several bids above the current price (even more than the other three which had already closed), so I ran the risk of being bumped up, but I didn't want to go to sleep high bidder on two cards, and I wanted one (strictly for research purposes, of course).

As it turned out nothing happened. All the cards I was high on when I went to sleep closed as that price. But I would have preferred the ability to see quickly if I was going to be outbid on the card I won so I could have pivoted to the other card (which I think a 15-minute individual closing would have allowed me to do more efficiently).

Just a very minor quibble...I imagine the current closing method works better for other people.

I will add that in every recent auction where I have gone to sleep with a max bid on a card, the auto-bid has not come into play at all, let alone being bid up to my max. I know some people don't like to leave max bids, but at least for the usual array of major auctions, I have not had any issues with it.

Was mildly surprised to win this one for the price, it's the only D352 Cicotte I have seen:

Really wanted at least one Sisler, one OJ and one of the 1921s Fournier). I was high bidder on several well after 1230 Central time. Alas, fell asleep.

Disappointed. But lessons learned: plan to spend a lot more money with high max bids, and don't plan on sleeping the night bidding closes.

Great auction!

Great Biscuit, Jim. I was hovering over the bid button on that one as it closed. Congrats on picking up that great card.

I picked up a few more Sislers for my collection.

Default LOTGs

I too noticed the really strong N172 results.
I went 1916 instead last night----picked up the Gimbels Cicotte and the Indianapolis Brewing Gandil.

(Todd, nice Morehouse Cicotte---------I almost went after that one as well, and instantly regret not doing so...)

Demand for him seems to have been pretty strong recently. I'm not sure if it is general hobby stuff for specific to Sisler, but I've noticed a run-up in his stuff - especially exhibits.

Congrats on the W575. I had at least one of the bids on your card and would've liked to have it, but I wasn't responsible for running you up.

I'm curious how many people out there would consider themselves to be Sisler collectors. I'm one. Apparently someone else consigned the Sisler collection to Al. Anybody else want to admit to collecting him?

I am not a Sisler collector. I do collect Ichiro cards and see this as pairing something unique to that part of my collection. Their bond in baseball history is incredible. I encourage anyone to read up on how Ichiro visited Sisler's grave after breaking the record. A class act all around.

I see Sisler as often overlooked and under appreciated in baseball history. He didn't get to 3000 hits, but look at what he did during his peak. Dude just hit and did not stop!

So many of his cards depict him fielding or throwing, which are all great cards, but a hitting image is choice #1 for me if it is available.

The OJ prices were pretty wild. When I sell a Watch Burnam it's a $185 card. If I sell Big Sam Thompson it's $850 not 20 grand.

E cards are down, so that's what I bought.

Going in I wanted the Otto Frank Holbert cabinet. I pushed it to $1440, but let it go. These prototypes are bargains I think, but they sell pretty low for what they are.

The OJ prices were pretty wild. When I sell a Watch Burnam it's a $185 card. If I sell Big Sam Thompson it's $850 not 20 grand.

E cards are down, so that's what I bought.
Nice Bemis Rob, hard to find that one centered.

It seems the CJ Cobbs are not being available like they were just in the last couple years and people holding onto them. The example was a pretty good looking 4, very solid eye appeal.

I picked up a nice set of Victorian Trade cards that had been on my want list, and a few more Federal League photos. However, upon closer analysis this morning, it turns out that one of the Federal League photos I picked up is actually a 1916 Cubs picture. (Please see my other thread trying to identify the player in the background)

Thanks, Phil, I was glad to get it. I was looking at an e93 Jones that was also a bargain, but I did not place a marker bid on it.

The Jones was nice too. I had markers on both those cards but was making a push on the PC796 Matty, which I didn't get. On to REA with some dry powder from my consignments last night.

I won three cards last night - two Herpolsheimer‘s and the well loved Johnson; the T206 SC OP. The Herpolsheimer’s are the Steve O’Neill and the Zeb Terry.
How could I pass up on a name like Herposheimer’s? I will be trying to work that name into conversations all week for sure! Happy to get these.
