Default SCD M101 article with wide gap posting for Tom

Posted By: dan mckee

Tom wrote me and asked me to post this picture. I believe the brilliant vintage minds at SCD displayed a reprint for this article. Dan.

In fact I'd bet on it. Note that they also might have picked up on the fact that the m101-5 was issued in 1916, but did not. They speculated that the card was either in error listing him as a Giant-remarkable coincidence since he became a Giant for the first time on December 23, 1915--or that it was printed in that brief window when Kauff jumped to McGraw's team. Guess you can't beat 'em up too bad though, seems the hobby as a whole allowed the m101-5 date to be wrong for 85 years.

As the author of that series about Benny Kauff, I can positively state that the card used for illustration was a reprint. Back in 1993 you didn't just jump on eBay and buy a M101-4/5 of a specific player to use for illustrative purposes.

I hope Tom is reading this. For the record, I am sure Dan has handled more m101-4/5's than I, but I can safely say that out of the thousand or so I have handled I have never seen a real one with a large gap, between the pic and the thin line around the picture.....Until I do I will believe they are all reprints....regards

Thanks Bob, I emailed your response directly to Tom. That should close the case for the wide gap M101's. I would maybe state that the pictured card is a reprint for future articles so that this is avoided. I agree, before the internet, it wasn't easy just to find many issues. Take Care, Dan.
