Default T206 Cobb Red - What to do?

Posted By: Dave Snyder

Having only started my T206 collection about a year ago, I've run into a quandry of sorts regarding a T206 Ty Cobb (Red Background - Piedmont 150) that I purchased recently. The card is slabbed as an SGC 30 and I paid about what you'd think for this particular issue. When the card arrived however, I could not for the life of me, figure out how this card only graded a 30. I have several SGC 30 T206's and they aren't even close to the condition of this card. Perefectly centered, no paper loss or staining, no creases, wrinkles or blemishes, no marks, not miscut - no qualifiers of any kind. In my opinion - it should be at least a 40 if not a 50

I'll post a scan this evening when I get home from work, but the fundamental question is, do I break it out and resubmit the card?

Can anyone share their personal experiences with resubmitting a card - especially one with a high value?

Thanks,

Dave

BTW - I accidentally posted this same message to the B/S/T board.....my apologies for any incovenience

why bother unless you are going to sell it? or you want all your cards in a certain holder.

Though it hasn't happened to me... Whenever you crack a case, you run the risk of getting labeled trimmed, altered or some other defect -it has occured. Though remote, you can call Sean at SGC to see if they'd reconsider the grade and resubmit. Sean peruses this board on occasion.

You will probably notice a light crease when removed from the holder. Try different angles holding it up to the light before cracking though. A good loupe might help as well.

Dave

I hope you mis-stated the back "Piedmont 150" of your RED Cobb ?

Otherwise, it is a FAKE !

This Cobb was never in the 150 Series. The Green, and Bat on Shoulder
Cobb cards are the only ones in the 150 Series.

...glue residue on the back that is not/hardly noticeable to the naked eye.

I would send back to SGC for a regrade opinion. I would not crack it out beforehand. They'll look at it, and if they think they've made a mistake, they'll let you know.

Thanks Ted - good catch.

Thanks to everyone for their responses so far. I have no desire to sell the card - at least not anytime soon. It's just that when I put it next to my SGC 30 Rube Marquard that has a pretty solid crease running through the bottom right corner and some wear on the edges it just doesn't compute.

My goal is to eventually complete the set and then start improving lower graded cards with higher ones. This would practically eliminate the need to ever look for another Red Cobb.

...are easier to predict than others...

I should mention that there is virtually no recognizable back on this card. It is a Piedmont Something-or-other.... I think....

Residue has downgraded many of my cards...to the naked eye they look ex or better....then you can "feel" something on the surfaces....Out of all of my submissions to SGC I have got 1 card bumped up 1 grade..(Guyn)..I thought it should have been a 6 or 7...it came back a 3 and, after arguing, they gave it a 4....there is some residue on the back that can't be seen and barely felt....as there are no wrinkles or creases anywhere....I thought it was a lock for a 7.....oh well...(sorry for the scan size but I wanted to show the crispness of this card)

Wow, Leon, that Obak is one heck of a 4.

Great card!

(Sorry to hijack - to get back on topic, I'd keep it in the holder and be happy to own the card)
