Default Prices Boom again this spring?

The crazy price boom that happened last spring - will it continue to boom even more this spring? ( rhetorical question I know). But really, will those Koufax RC's, Ryan & Reggie RC's, etc. go absolute bonkers, or will prices stay mildly settled now a year removed from the big boom?

PWCC has few very nice T206's closing tonite (a PSA 6 Cobb bat off just closed $7,500.) Do you think we will see a continued steady uptick in quality prewar? And speaking of PWCC, what seller in their right mind would NOT send their stuff to PWCC? They sure seem to get the best prices hands down. Remeber we all had jaw on floor couple years ago when a PSA 5 Cobb green went for, like, $18,500. ish? What if PWCC put up that card now? Whew!

Yes, it happens every spring, just like the arrival of the Easter bunny.

I believe PWCC gets lower prices that the major auction houses. That's the only reason I occasionally buy from them. And they charge their sellers a premium that the real AHs will typically waive on higher ticket items.

Default spring is good

Yup, every spring prices get quite healthy. But last year could have been a near once in a lifetime historical all-time crazy price jump for high end post war HOF Rookies.

Huh, I believe the exact opposite. I believe their was a thread here earlier that showed PWCC is about half the commissions of the AH's. The cards I bid on with them almost always go for a healthy price.

Some of my friends believe in PWCC---I prefer to sell my own stuff--but as to PWCC---I like buying there as there is no Juice added on---I bought 2 low grade Green Cobbs last night and was pleased with my buy price especially on a tough card to find right now----I don't know if the 50's Rookies are taking off again, but I know the Green Cobb is escalating.

Card sells for $125K at an auctionhouse: seller gets $100K after the 20% buyers commission.

Card sells for $120K at PWCC: seller gets $111K after 8% commission.

I also like PWCC (for buying). I bid on several last night and was fortunate to win five. I thought that I placed high bids on the ones that I lost but I guess someone had more $$ to spend than I.

I can't think of any auction house that would charge anything resembling 20% on a six figure card. In all likelihood it would be 0% possibly even pay the seller 105% of hammer price.

Welllllllllllllll...I'm a firm believer last years "boom" of 50's rookie cards was contrived. But who knows...some people still have not received the memo!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-Topps-N...3D142260836796

I'll take the psa7 cj wajo for 1/3 the money that sold through PWCC last night any day of my life.

But I'd suspect the start of bb season certainly will bring higher prices than the end!

In any market where such large amount of $$ are (apparently) changing hands, and articles are being written in Forbes magazine every time something significant sells, there will be speculators. If this meant an imminent collapse of the market there would never be a time to buy real estate in Florida, Hawaii, New York City, etc., etc.

The PSA 7 Cracker Jack that sold for $7000 last night in PWCC had lousy centering--what would a nice one sell for Maybe $9000!!---I love CJ's but I didn't like the centering on Johnson last night.

Id guess 1 of 20 cj johnsons have better than 60/40 centering...its a bear of a card to find well centered. Still a bargain imo compared to 60's super common cards.

We should look to the silver screen for guidance. It Happens Every Spring, and Chauncey Gardener tells us, in Being There, that there will be growth in the spring:

Don love the Wajo's! Both have nice centering relative to most examples. But it's crazy the difference between how PSA used to grade CJ's vs. today. That 7 would be a 5 or even a 4 if cracked and resubbed. And the SGC is a 2 or 2.5 if crossed over. There's now almost an automatic 1-2 pt. grade difference on SGC vs. PSA on CJ's.

AJ thanks for your opinion---I know you know your CJ's---the cards do look better live, my scanner doesn't do them justice.

both those johnsons are very nice esp in light of the challenge finding decent 14's! my point was that this card is very difficult to find well centered...that's all...and that I'd much rather spend my money on a card like a cj wajo than a 68' topps ryan!!!

If I had to choose between your 2...I'd take the 15'! I'm quite happy with mine...esp in light of how much I paid for it!!!!

That's quite sad, how did you function? Sorry, very sophomoric. It all started with the statement "Peter what do you think of these 2 Johnsons?" I just couldn't resist. Forgive me.

+1. Concerning $717,000 PSA 10 Rose rookies, $600,000+ Ryan "10's" and the like, focusing on the long rather than short term, I would be far more willing to bet on the "big doom," rather than "boom." In an investor/speculator driven market, most of these buyers don't stay, and when they leave, prices return to the level a true, long-term collector will pay. As I said before, I might be too pessimistic, but once that happens, don't be surprised if the decimal point moves about one place to the left on such items. I like the future appreciation potential far more on the PSA 7 1929 R316 Kashin Mel Ott I just won in the latest PWCC auction than any of the above.

Highest regards,

Larry
