I do not think anyone here is trying to get you to sell your items. We just want to give you our honest opinions, some of the items you have mentioned a very rare. Not sure if you found my website, but I help many dealers and collectors. I see that Barry also mentioned to help above - Barry is one of the best sources on this site. Look forward to seeing the pictures. you can send a link from your photobucket account

...just copy and paste the link to your photos individually, or the link in your address window directly into your post on this board.

I am particularly eager to see three Magie errors and your Plank T206.

Skydash- if I may call you that- could you please give us a general overview as to the condition of the cards, particularly the keys. Are they beat up? Average circulated? Pristine? Let's get the ball rolling.

Sky - the link worked until you edited the post and there was a > inserted at the end of the link. If you remove it it will work again.

Until then, the link can be copy/pasted into an open browser window. Delete the > from the end.

keep adding pictures and you should be fine, maybe more close-ups of the fronts so we can see the names - good effort - this will help a lot

skydash55,

Don't want to sound like a prick' but no one really cares about the 157 colgan "tin tops"! Unless you have jackson, wagner, cobb...

Three Magie errors and your Plank T206: We are all waiting! please take your photos in a well-lit room, F/B close ups if possible.

Well....here's the problem...I've got this list here..and it has every card in this collection....which is in NO particular order...so I have no idea what is where. So,until I can start digging into this thing, you'll have to wait...I've got to go to work now,so I am: 1)going to take a picture of the whole thing so you can seethe mess I'm dealing with and 2)I'm gonna grab the first thing on top and take a picture of it so you guys won't collectively wizz your shorts!

How come only the T206 Minor Leaguers are showing on that big pile? Where's the good stuff?

This appears to be a terrific collection. I would:

1. Invest in having every single card graded by SGC. They would give you a bulk discount rate. You can start an on-line submission here:

http://www.sgccard.com/online_submission.htm

2. After you receive all of your cards back, they will be graded with a numerical grade of 10 to 100. This makes your cards essentially liquid and easily comparable to recent sales of the same card. As such, you will be able to appraise your cards at VintageCardPrices.com individually here:

http://www.vintagecardprices.com/set-profile/index.php?set_id=244&set_name=&set_type=&set_number=T206&sa=1&limit=100

There is a fee for membership, but it will pay for itself in the knowledge of the values your will acquire. It tracks the most recent sales of all graded pre-war baseball cards.

3. If you decide to sell, I agree with the above posters that recommended Robert Edwards Auctions. You can contact them here:

http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/rea_contact.html

Points 1 and 2 will require a financial investment on your part, but it will be well worth it. Since I collect exclusively T206 cards, and have for the past 10 years, I would be more than happy to e-mail you about any of these or other related issues.

Let's see some of those individual T-206's....more particularly the Magie, Plank, Cobbs, and some of the different backs.

Edited to add: Of course when you get home from work

Skydash55, digging these out of the trash is going to be one of the smartest decisions you'll ever make in your lifetime. The second (and its a very close second) was coming here.

I know there have been big vintage collections thrown out in the not so distant past, but I wonder how often it still occurs?

Skydash,
Just for a little extra protection on the cards -- even though the cards seem to be in rigid or semi-rigid holders -- you might want to junk the rubber bands as a means of separation. They might inadvertantly bend something, even slightly. Use cardboard or post-its as separation if you have to. Your main focus now is condition protection. This is just a thought from someone who learned a few things the hard way.

...that you can get tremendous personal attention from Barry Sloate, who also runs one of the premiere pre-war auctions houses. I believe he has already posted on this thread and you can find his contact info here:

Hello Skydash55,

Congratulations on your find. I'm just starting out in the pre-war collecting and don't know squat compared to others on the board, but I did have one experience with Barry Sloate and his auction. Even though he was very busy on his auction day he took the time to answer all my questions as if I was his most important client. From one novice to another he would be a great resource in helping you with your collection.

Best wishes,

Joe

If your intent is to sell and you consign them REA or another auction house, they will most likely be more than willing to foot the bill for the grading, or at least work out the cost of grading into your final selling fee, if any. This way, you have no out of pocket expense.

Brad, you may not be interested in the Tin Tops, but I find them far more interesting than a bunch of t206s, even if they include 2 of the Big 3. I've sen enough Planks and Magie's in my day that they don't really excite me anymore. How often do you get to see huge collection of Tin Tops? That's something worth checking out and getting excited about.
