Default Tricked on 33 Goudeys... Almost

I've been shopping around for mid grade Goudeys and ran across a nice yellow back Ruth and Gehrig. I understand the source of where I located these cards is iffy, but the conversation with the seller did not raise flags. He offered a fair price (once again not raising flags) and I started to get my money ready for purchase. Did the typical PSA verify to try pulling previous transactions and found previous Heritage listings with these certs. Instantly had the, "you f#cker!" feeling after seeing how badly the borders and PSA tags compared. Pisses me off thinking about how shady this hobby can be.

Like I mentioned in my post, I'm aware of offerup issues. And I don't typically go searching for my high value purchases on said sites. I happened to run across these and had a long conversation with the guy before contemplating. Just another example of dishonesty/fraud I figured I'd share.

"buyers" go to sites like that hoping to get deals; "sellers" go to sites like that hoping to scam "buyers". Deals are never had, but sometimes scams are effective.

I mainly go there to surf around for set filler commons, which I've had decent luck with (mostly post war). Stumbled across said cards and almost fell into the trap. Lesson learned and I'll be sticking to the tried/true locations

I had same question. OP explained yes they're counterfeit slabs and PSA labels probably trying to sell reprint cards as original. But the cases/cards to do match the PSA verified images from recent auction.

You can see the case has been tampered with because the borders are heavily frosted.

The cards do not match the images. The real Gehrig is very off-centered left to right.

if the pictures were more clear would the "tampering" be visually evident?

Likely not in the images; again, holders have different levels of frosting. OfferUp is intended to be a local site to facilitate in-person sales, right? Easier to analyze the level of frosting (resealed slab) in hand. Also worth it to scan the Cert Number with the PSA app and try to transfer ownership of the card on PSA's inventory system before shelling out the dough. If the card is already registered and the person you're buying from can not release it, it could be stolen or faked. The bar code should also work.
You can also tell them that you will buy it on the contingency that they send it back to PSA for a reholder and will pay their additional fees *IFF* (if and only if) PSA validates it by slabbing it in the new lighthouse label. If they balk at sending it in to PSA, you have your answer.

Neither the slabs or cards match the previous auction. On the slab, look t the red boarder and spacing between text/barcode on the PSA label. Then look at the borders and cut of each card (especially the Gehrig). They are very different

Default Slabs

A collector I know traded a 1933, and 1934 authentic raw Gehrig's Goudy's for a two PSA 9 Jordan RC, (not the latest labels)--turns out both Jordan cards were fake enclosed in fake PSA holders, although both had PSA label SSN--which were pirated-

I personally owned the 1934 Goudy at one time and offered to purchase but the collector said the trade was better for Him-okay I said!

After the fact the red flag in my opinion the guy sent the Jordan's for inspection before he sent the Gehrig's--- the deal was made outside Ebay where the Gehrig's were listed! Just one example of many different collectables faked for the quick dollars.

So what happened with the seller at the end - Did you try and discuss the problem with them?

Yes, I told him of the issue and he acted ignorant to it. Said he bought them from another seller and felt they were real. I will follow up to make sure the posting gets removed.

Concerned, sure. There is a lot of fraud in this hobby/business. Do your due diligence before making a purchase anywhere, and always use PayPal goods & services when paying online.

add Always fake at auction and you have a scammers paradise. I wouild not use either site for as much as a Kewpie doll. How stupid to waste 1 second of your life on those sites shopping for bargains . Shopping for an a** pounding is more like it.
