Default Best Babe Ruth cards as a Yankee??

Posted By: Bill

I have been looking for a early copy of Babe Ruth as a Yank. What do you think is Ruth's best card? I personally like the 1922 E120 American Caramel, I would like to hear some opinions.
Thanks...........

That is a good question. It seems there are not many attactive Ruth cards in Yankee uniform until the Goudeys.

So many of the black and white American Caramel sets recycle the same images. The picture pose in the E121, E120, E220 looks so similar to the pitching pose in the M101 and Collin-McCarthy cards. The York also used a similar pitching pose and this image is shared by all the ice cream issues. I like the montage in the E126 but that one was used in the E121 as well.

If I had to choose one, I would go with the Canadian Maple Crispette portrait.

I am curious where you came up with the number "12" known for the V117 Ruths? Is that how many you have seen? I've had 2-3, and have seen at least 5-10 more without really trying... I do think it's a great mug shot of him.....kind regards

12 graded so far!

1 PSA
1 GAI
10 SGC (1 is A)

Now that I think of it! Yes, there are 2 or 3 Raw beaters I've seen. I'm not sure if those card have been graded since I last saw them.

Possibly 15+ Ruth cards I can account for (If you have one please post!)

By the way I not trying to promote this set (I just love this card!)

Your clarification makes more sense to me. I know you track them quite a bit and was surprised if you were suggesting there are only 12 known, period. regards

Here's my two pre 1926 favorites. Also, I like his 1921 Exhibits. Does anybody have a picture of a Ruth 1922 William Patterson? I've been thinking about that one lately, but haven't seen one in awhile. That one is hard to find.

How much do those Maple Crispette or Schapira Bro. Ruth's go for in low to mid-grade? A rough range would be great

One of my only Ruth Yankee cards... I'd like to think there are 12 or less of these?

I also like the look of the 1922 Neilson's Chocolate. Would like to see some more scans...and more opinions. I need to pick up a Ruth as close as possible to his earliest days with the Yanks, for my collecton.

My best guess for a Maple Crispette low to mid grade would be 1k to 3.5k (SGC30 to SGC60)
The last graded Shapira I saw on eBay was an SGC30, & it went for about $600.00.
I know you've been looking for some Ruth's. Shoot me an email, & I might be able to help. I'm at work right now, but I'll respond this weekend.

I think your pricing the Maple Ruth to conservatively. I'd price the card SGC30 at 3.5K+!

YES! I'm still shocked at an SGC50 Ruth selling for an extremely low price in the Mastro winter Auction (2006) $2,224.80 w/ juice

(IMO) If this card was sold today it would fetch 5k possibly more!

e220 is one of the coolest Ruth poses in a Yankee uniform that I can think of. This one is from the last mastro auction - wish I had won it.

"12 graded so far!

1 PSA
1 GAI
10 SGC (1 is A)"

Brad - Just checked the PSA pop report and they have graded 4 now
a PSA-7, a 6 and 2 lower graded cards.

Brad - Keep in mind, ya never can tell if anyone cracked
out an SGC to submit to PSA or vice versa, or if anyone resubmited
a card multiple times as both situations would skew the #'s.
Also, how do you know GAI has only graded one card?
They do not have a pop report thats accesible to the public.

I really like the 1921 exhibits, nice pose in the outfield with hands on knees. I have a beeter and it's one of my personal favorites.

Also , for what it's worth the 1933 Sanella is dirt cheap and a really nice picture
