Default More Old Judge Glove Questions

Posted By: David Arcidiacono

Thanks to everyone who was so helpful in responding to my previous question about N172 images showing players with gloves. I have a few follow-up questions that I hope you all can help with.

How many gloves is Ed Delahanty wearing in his 1889 image (bending down)?

What year are the following N172 cards:

Ed Delahanty (Throwing)
Phil Tomney (hands at chest)
Dave Orr with Columbus (reaching down)
Sid Farrar (bending, ball in hand)

Thanks again for all the help.

David Arcidiacono

Pose years:

Delahanty--1889
Tomney--1889
Orr--1887 pose, although Columbus card is from 1889
Farrar--1887

Can someone post an explanation of how to determine the exact year of an N172 Old Judge card? I hate to create a lot of work for someone (Jay?), but I think this would be helpful information for quite a few of us. Thanks.

Paul, the old judge cards have the years printed on them in the copyright line. Some poses are used over again but list the players with a different team so you know from proof that its an 1887 photo but was re-released in 1889 like Jay cited in the Dave Orr case.Orr played for Columbus in 1889 so they reissued him card changing the team name only, and the date on the card. Some cards had the new teams name "airbrushed"(technically it wasnt an airbrush but for sake of this point) over their old jersey

A word of caution on Old Judge Copyrights, they can be misleading.

For instance, Dan Brouthers was issued three cards in 1887, all with 1887 copyrights. One of the batting poses was re-issued in 1889 with the team change to Boston and an incorrect 1888 copyright.

Another example which may be an isolated case occurs with the 1889 Bennett card. The photo Goodwin & Company used for Bennett (with Boston) was actually an 1886 Tomlinson photo (taken while with Detroit).

Paul--The exact year for a card is easy--it is determined by the form of the Goodwin & Co. ad at the bottom. For a good visual see Lew Lipset's Enclclopedia of Baseball Crads Vol. 1. The year the photograph was taken is a little trickier as Joe has explained in the prior post.

I know the Old Judge cards were printed in 1887, 1888, 1889 but didn't they also release some in 1890?
