Default Made some recent additions

Pulled the trigger on these over the weekend. Been chugging along the past couple months, but these may slow the purchases for a while. Now up to 74.

It's been almost two months since I've sent an update, and I've added twenty cards. My new total is 427, like the engine that powers this 1970 Camaro Super Stock "Mr Bardahl"
 photo Scan 44.jpg
I also added my first Cobb:

Congrats on the Cobb. May I ask how much it set you back? I ask, because I got a Cobb, bat off shoulder, a few months ago for around $400. Since then, it seems tough to find any Cobb's under $600.

Hi Frank,

I recently added this pair of T206 cards. If you could please raise my Monster Number to 82, I would appreciate it.

Best regards,

Eric

Default Hello Frank

I really enjoyed meeting you at the National this past Friday. And, talking T206's and selling you some.

I acquired 44 more T206's for my set #4.

Frank - I wish I had been able to get to the National and perhaps be a 'fly on the wall' for your discussion with Tec Z...would have been so cool !

Anyway, I am still going in the wrong direction (I guess 'Monsters' scare me)

With what I'm selling this week, my new number is 53.

Hi Frank! It was so great to meet you and hang out for a little while at the Net54 "meet-up" on Friday night. I also got a chance to talk to Mark M and Ted Z at their table, I had so much fun!
Off grade T206 cards were EVERYWHERE at this years National Convention, and I did some major damage to my want list. At the National, I picked up 45 beat up T206 cards to add to my binder, including 12 S/Lers, and these 14 HOFers. My monster number is now 484.

Default Another Milestone

With this year's National Card Show acquisitions, there are now over 50,000 cards listed on the Monster Number Thread. Imagine that.

Hi Frank I last reported two and a half months ago, and since then I've added 18 cards. My new total is 502.
Had some success in the latest Brockelman & Luckey Auction, and my winnings arrived today. They experienced some minor surgery on my workbench as I cracked them out of their PSA holders so they would fit into the binder
Three Southern Leaguers and Kid Elberfeld (Washington).

Hi Frank it's been almost two months since I last reported. I have added nine cards, so my updated "Monster Number" is 511. This group of eight hits arrived today via UPS.
I keep my set in a binder, so some of these guys spent some time on my workbench as I freed them from their plastic tomb

Cobb and Wiltse were cracked out of SGC A holders, Wiltse looks to be VG/EX so I assume it was cleaned or something?
Brown cracked out of SGC 10 holder.
Thornton cracked out of SGC 20 holder.
Otey cracked out of SGC 40 holder.
Durham cracked out of SGC 55 holder.
Overall and Foster purchased raw.

These are the seven cards I need to get to 518:
(Dahlen Brooklyn) (Howard Savannah) (Mathewson dark cap) (Mathewson portrait) Shaughnessy (Young Cleveland bare hand shows) (YoungCleveland portrait)
Larry

Default 4th Birthday

This dinky little thread enters its fifth year today.

The fourth year resulted in a decrease in the number of posts (less than one/day for the first time), but we are still adding 20 cards per day and now have 53185.9 cards recorded.

We continue to add 43-45 new sets each year, since year 1.

Perhaps the most remarkable statistic though is the number of views.

In year 1 there were 27567 views, in year 2 there were 33952 views, in year 3 there were 48619 views and in the past twelve months there have been 74610 views. That certainly looks like an exponential progression to me.

The appeal mystifies me at times, but I do realize that in some perverse way this thread becomes a motivator for those trying to complete the set and for others it seems to be a right of passage after joining the forum. I am sure there are other reasons as well. As I have said before it initially was not intended to be a perpetual motion device. It was also not intended to be a pain in the neck for those who scoff at mere White Borderites.

Someday it will end, but I'm not sure how or why.

Frank you hit the nail on the head here! I'm almost into counting the number more than I am about finding the perfect card because I can always upgrade later.

Please update me to 286. Closing in on 300! I believe I started the year with about 40 or so quite the progress. A HUGE thanks to Scott, Jeff, and Luke. Without them my progress certainly wouldn't have been this positive.

Cheers ,
Josh

Happy Birthday to me! My Monster Number is now 515!

This has happened to me once or twice. You look and look for a card, nothing in your price range. Then not only does one show up, but two available cards. So I bought BOTH of the Howard (Savannah) cards

These three remain to get me to 518:
(Dahlen Brooklyn) Shaughnessy (Young Cleveland bare hand shows)

Larry

Hi Frank it's been seven weeks since I last posted. I've added the three cards needed to reach my goal of 518! A little about my set:
I display my cards in 20 pocket sheets in a binder. I had to "crack" out 73 cards broken down like this: SGC: ("A" 14 diff) ("10" 23 diff) ("20" 11 diff) ("30" 3 diff) ("35" "40" "55" 1 each) PSA: ("A" 4 diff) ("1" 8 diff) ("1.5" 3 diff) ("2" 3 diff) ("3" 1)
I want to upgrade 40 cards (including 9 HOF) so that should keep me busy for awhile
#516 was Bill Dahlen (Brooklyn). I was in California a couple weeks ago when I got a text from one of my fellow OBC members who told me this card had just gone up on eBay. Price was $205 OBO and I didn't even bother to offer I just bought it. Cracked out of a PSA 1 slab.

#517 Cy Young (bare hand shows). I saw this card on eBay (I thought I recognized the seller ID as Net54 member Luke L) and it was just about in my price range. A couple days later, Luke posted it here in BST section with a $50 discount (I think) from the eBay price. I bought it 10 minutes after Luke posted it!

#518 Shag Shaughnessy. Cracked out of a PSA "2" holder this was a part of board member Steve W. collection that was sold on EBay through "Invest In Baseball".

Larry,

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Job !!!

I think I predicted a while ago that Shag would be your last card .....

Although, BEWARE, Mr. Demmitt and O'Hara are lurking behind the next corner.

Fun stuff, Scott

How can I be added to the list? I started collecting T206 in Nov. 2015 and I have 12 total cards:

1. Abstein, Bill
2. Alperman, Whitey
3. Armbruster, Herman
4. Ball, Neal
5. Barry, Jack
6. Burchell, Fred
7. Burke, Jimmy
8. Clarke, JJ
9. Donohue, Jigs
10. Graham, Bill
11. Howard, Del
12. Emil Batch

I can provide pictures.

EDIT: make that 12. Bought a Emil Batch while browsing this thread and getting the itch to buy another lol

Thanks!
Joe

Frank --

Please update my Monster number to 402 for my first set, 34 for my second set. Three cards from Luke L that just arrived in the mail put me over the 400 mark. (I thought that another card that arrived the other day from another board member was my 400th, but I had miscounted, and it was only #399.)

This isn't part of my official Monster number tally, but I also have back runs going on four card for which I have at least six different backs each. For the record, they are:

Camnitz arms at sides (6): Piedmont 460/25, SC 460/30, Sovereign 460, Polar Bear, Tolstoi, EPDG

Quinn (6): Piedmont 350, SC 350/25, SC 350/30, American Beauty 350 frame, Broad Leaf 350, Cycle 350

Camnitz arms over head (7): Piedmont 460/25, SC 460/30, SC 460/42 overprint, Sovereign 460, Polar Bear, EPDG, Cycle 460

Wiltse portrait w/cap (8): Piedmont 460/25, Piedmont 460/42, SC 460/30, SC 460/42 overprint, Sovereign 460, Polar Bear, Tolstoi, Lenox (black)
