Top 10 Personally Collected Players who retired before WW2

Curious who others are collecting. And need help on if my list looks right and who are the last 2.

1) Babe Ruth
2) Ty Cobb (although I don’t have one)
3) Lou Gehrig
4) Walter Johnson
5) Christy Mathewson
6) Honus Wagner
7) Cy Young
8) Tris speaker (also working on getting one)
9) ?
10) ?

Of course I would add Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio but they played after WW2

I would add Jimmie Foxx and Hank Greenberg - or, if you prefer pitchers Grover Alexander and Lefty Grove.

Feller, Ted and DiMag all started before the war.

Exactly. I can't believe all the votes for Jackson. I think many misread the original question. It's not a "Who's the Best Player" thread, it's a "Which Player is the Most Collected" thread. And I would bet that Chase is way more collected than Jackson.

There was an interview Ruth did about who he pitched and who he thought was easy and hard. He said Ty Cobb was easy to pitch to, even though he called him the greatest hitter he ever pitched to. But he said Joe Jackson was really hard to pitch to and Joe would always hit well against him.

That said, still can't collect Shoeless.

If Jackson isn't so collected, why are his cards so expensive? Ever since I started collecting prewar cards in the early 80s, he has been a top 5 in demand (Ruth, Wagner, Cobb, Gehrig and Jackson). Chase? I wouldn't even put him in the top 25. Pretty much every Hofer is in more demand than him.

I interpret the question as whose cards for which players are on most collectors want lists? I don't have any Joe Jax either because they are very expensive. However, I would much rather have a Jackson card than a Chase card if both of them were the same price.

Then I believe you interpreted it incorrectly. The OPs question wasn't, "Which players card(s) do you most desire?" but "Curious who others are collecting?".

I agree with you that Jackson's cards are very expensive and I don't own one either. But that's why I said Chase was more collected...simply for price point alone.

Agree on this. Jackson is a top collected card as is Cobb, Ruth, Mathewson, Gehrig. I think Chase is on par with Johnson and ahead of Speaker and Hornsby for sure. Remember, there are 5 Chase cards in the T206 set. That's more than Cobb or any other player.

I would collect Jackson. But if I’m holding my cards for my son, what players would I want him to have. That is if I don’t die and my wife sells them “above” my back... haha.

I think the point is being missed here...there have to be more folks collecting Chase than Jackson for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with who was the better player (for the record, Jackson is the better player). Who can reasonably collect Jackson? Career contemporary cards of Jackson are a fraction of what is available for Chase. Those that are available are expensive to a fault as well as considerably more rare than Chase...or just about anyone else up for consideration in this topic. Chase has every bit as interesting story as Jackson, is also someone who has HOF credentials, was as popular as any of his peers and, I would argue, he would be an even greater cult player if he had a movie made about him like Jackson did. How many folks here collect Jackson? How many Chase? One Jackson in your collection doesn’t make it a player collection. I have 21 different Chase cards in my collection and it likely ranks as one of the weakest Chase collections on this board. Chase makes the top 10 in my mind...

Good points...I agree! I don't think I own any chases????

They are readily available on eBay, the BST...buy a couple and you can join in on the fun, too!
