Which grading service to use for beaters?
I'm continuing to work on my low grade 33 Goudey collection (up to 38 cards now!), but some of the cards that I'm picking up are real beaters. For example, holes, damaged backs like they were glued to a scrapbook, writing, very worn corners almost the point of being round, etc. Which grading service (PSA, SGC, BVG) do you think is better for this situation? In a way, I'm leaning towards PSA because I think I prefer a grade of say PSA 2 MK to SGC Authentic. However, I really like the holders for SGC much more, and I'd prefer to build an SGC set registry rather than a mixed PSA/SGC one. Any one else who collects low grade have an opinion on this? Thanks!

Or you can always just keep 'em raw.

Hmm
Not sure you wanna pay $10+ (per card) to grade a card worth $5 or $10. If I were you, I would just save the grading fees and put them towards more cards. To answer your question though: SGC.

If I were collecting that set, I would buy the cards already graded. The amount of money you would spend on grading and postage would be astronomical. Also, I don't think there would be much of a price difference in buying a PSA 2 Goudey versus a raw card in the same condition. IMO, it's not worth it to grade beaters unless it's a superstar or HOF type player.

Already graded is the way to go, they can be had for the same cost, or sometimes less than a comparable raw card. I've got 4 dozen or so 33 Goudey beaters, only 14 are graded. I bought most of those already graded, the cards I had graded were HOFers and the commons I really liked.
Enjoy whichever way you go. I prefer SGC, but I have PSA cards as well. |

I generally keep any cards that are VG or below as raw --- unless they are big stars.
If you must have them graded (for registry of other reasons) my personal choice is SGC. Regards, Scott |

The obvious answer is BCCG, they're at least "5s." Now seriously, if you must have them graded my choice would be SGC.

Sgc
You'll be surprised how many of those $10 cards turn into $40 cards because they grade an SGC 40.

Definitely keep them raw. Why waste money on slabs to protect a beater when you can use that money to buy more beaters? Not much value in having a professional grader distinguish between poor to good.

SGC has a special now for $6 a card, $250 max value per card, 10 card minimum. You don't need to pay a pricey annual membership fee either, just send an order in when you want, quit when you want. I like SGC because it doesn't use those stupid qualifiers, which don't make any sense to me.
I'm often surprised that some cards that I didn't think much of end up good or VG. |

Yea, I know it doesn't make financial sense, but I still like to put them in slabs for some, probably stupid reasons. First there are a lot of counterfeit/reprint (which don't say reprint on the card) 33 Goudey's, so I just like to know that all of my cards are authentic. Also, it makes my collection nice and uniform when they're in slabs. And here's the dumbest reason of all. I like the feeling that the cards now have a nice comfortable "home" now even though they are beaters. I know, crazy.
Thanks for the advice, however. I'm pretty sure I'll just go with SGC. Gary |
