Default Opinions on selling high grade 1960 Mantle?

Hi all,

Just wanted to gauge some opinions. When my son was born a little over a year ago I wanted to start a collection for him (both as an investment but also to hope to spark some interest in collecting vintage as he got older). Wanted him to have a special card and after much research decided on a PSA 7.5 1960 Mantle. Bought through a large consigner on EBay. The card is nice but to be honest ever since I got it it just never really resonated with me - probably because in the back of my mind always wondering with that high a grade if it has ever been altered, etc.

As it doesn't quite have the sentimental value I thought it would, I am considering selling it and instead using money to buy either a few lower grade T206 cards - maybe a Mathewson and Johnson, or earlier issue Mantle, Aaron, Clemente instead which I think I (and hopefully he) will appreciate more going forward.

I have honestly never sold anything on EBay, only bought. Seems like my best bet to maximize return, as opposed to someone buying from me as a seller with zero feedback, would be to go the consignment route. But am torn with all the bad press and class action against the bigger houses (irony right that I originally bought the card from one of them). Any advice on best options to sell if I do end up moving forward?

Thanks for the feedback!

I would hold on to it. That’s a great card to have in a vintage portfolio. Move on and buy more cards that you like. Not sure why you would think it is altered with it being in a psa holder. They are pretty good on picking up altered cards.
If you want to sell it why don’t you try selling it here on Net54? Lots of good collectors on the board.

A 1960 Mantle PSA 7.5 last sold for about $2,000, but that was in 2019, and one hasn't been sold in a bit. The market has also exploded since then, so I would ask a bit more than the $2k. Quite possibly $3k.

Thanks Scott. Ha, guess I'm just jaded from reading too much on message boards claiming like 80% of all cards over a PSA 5 were at one point trimmed.

You're right, from a portfolio standpoint it is pretty solid and I do expect it to continue to be valuable. With a big resurgence in the card hobby the past 1-2 years, I suppose I started getting nervous that other cards I really want may skyrocket in value and I lose my window to be able to actually own them. This is pretty much irrational FOMA as even if a few of them continue to rise over the next few years, we're probably talking like 20-30% not 3-5x their current value. These ARE still vintage cards after all and not Project 2020 cards circa memorial day weekend
