Default I am YOUNG at heart- collector's age poll

So with the great thread about who will be buying our stuff in 20 yrs I thought this would be a very timely poll. First of all I am 48 and hope I AM the one still buying in 20 yrs. So, lets see how old our members are.....

I should be thankful that you posted this poll now, since in a little over a week I move to a new age group. It should also be noted that my IQ is still higher than my age, although that too may change one day.

That 41 to 50 demographic seems to be pretty dominant so far. I'm 47 but I will say that I got carded yesterday to buy a can of chew.

Seeing as how this is a pre-war forum, and pre-war cards are, generally speaking, somewhat costly, I'd be interested to know how closely the developing curve above correlates to a general US wealth by age distribution. It may simply be a case that most pre-war collectors are in their 50s because that's when people, on average, earn the most. If that's true then such a poll in, say, the CU forum, might have a greater distribution in the younger ages where the majority of cards are not as expensive.

Hey Matt
That is a very valid observation. I would have to guess the CU forum or the Beckett forum would have a younger age demographic, overall. But, this is about who is going to buy OUR cards....and this IS a pre-war forum. I would like to see this poll on either of those 2 boards. I am quite sure it would be far different numbers and a much younger general age. Just my opinion....

The supposition is that young collectors who are collecting shiny crap now will be collecting OUR cards when they are in their 40s and 50s because they will be able to afford it then. I think looking at the poll and seeing only a few 20 year olds and therefore concluding the future of OUR cards might be in trouble is a mistake for that reason.

I'd venture that had you taken this exact poll 20 years ago, in 1990, the distribution would be similar, with very few 20 year olds collecting pre-war, but we seem to be doing OK now as many have moved over from the modern topps cards they collected as children.

That...is simply awesome.

Considering I am 33, I would get into some serious trouble with the first half of that statement.

But it made me think of a movie scene quoted many, many times....

Or what was said,

Looking closely at the pole it appears that the 31-40 and 41-50 range are close. Overall (up to this point) the 31-50 range is at 60%.

42, though I read at a 44 year-old level.

I'm also starting to appreciate why Jack Benny stayed 39.

Default 42 now

I agree that this demographic will tend to be older than the collection of posters at CU or Beckett. In my case I "graduated" from 50's-60's Topps when I finished up that run and began my pre-war collection with some aggressive intent only recently. Affordability figures into the equation.

Quick question for Leon, How many votes to the Bruceii get in the poll?
