I realize that these backs are regarded as quite a rarity...but should they be? I started looking for them about 8-10 years ago and after aquiring a few I stopped because they seemed relatively easy to find. Between the lenox and the red hindu in scarcity...I don't know?

In my experience, fact 42 is not close to lenox or red hindu.
It's not often that you see a red cobb/lenox.

I can't my original post. In the past I brought up the question as to whether or not anyone else had a Factory 42 Piedmont box by Liggett & Myers with an "Allen & Ginter" label on the sides.

My belief is that the Factory 42 backs are rare because they were only issued by Liggett & Myers, not American Tobacco. I could be wrong. Anyone have any other Piedmont boxes they can scan and put up to disprove this? My box is Factory 42, 4th district, North Carolina. Tax stamp is dated Aug. 5th. 1909. (No Overprinting)

I've been looking for them for several years, through I don't know how many thousands of cards and I've found only a handful. They are certainly much tougher than any of the "standard" brands. Since I don't collect rare backs I can't say how they compare to Lenox, red Hindu, etc.

It is not very rare.

Please sell it to me for $1,000.

It is only worth $10 ... but I would pay the extra just because I like people who post on this board.

(In all seriousness, if you have ANY desire to sell it, please let me know!)

In all seriousness...

the gurus always say that it is EASIER to find "rare back" T206 cards of SUPERSTARS than it is to find them of the common players...

since EVERYONE has always saved their Cobb and Mathewson cards... and thrown away their commons ... even back in 1912!

I have seen the following:

6 Red Background Cobb's with Lenox
4 Bat Off Cobb's with Uzit
4 Carolina Brights
4 Drums
2 Red Hindu
5 Red back Pied 42's
3 Bat off Pied 42's

Hope that helps Brian

I just saw a T206 common PSA3 on eBay for $295 with the piedmont Factory 42 back - are they worth that much?

I think they are easier to find than Red Hindus, etc., only because they look so much like the more common Piemdmont varieties, and so many sellers don't realize what they have.

Hey there.
Brian: Were some of those the same examples or all separate?
What's the breakdown of fronts to backs? You stopped after the first two? Are they red or bat off?

I've seen a couple bat off w/ lenox and only one other red w/lenox, but maybe I havn't been looking in the right place.

Rob: In terms of this post, I do think your card is rare and even though it is in fair condition is a great piece. This board is interesting because many collectors will start to pull out there t206 rare backs and I start to think "geez, that many people have that front/back combination?" And then I start to realize how many people with "world class" collections contribute to this board. I would love to know how many red portrait with lenox example there are out there, but we'll never really know.
Anybody want to take a guess?

Rob...I'm jealous.

Hi Rob,
I'm at the coast, so I don't have the red vs bat off breakdown, but I have seen a Red background in ex condition and 1 in a psa 1 holder. I'll try to make a list when I get home. Thanks Brian

PS Art has seen more than I have, so maybe he'll chime in....

Are you putting together a complete set with rare/uncommon backs?
