Default Trying to post under 1949 leaf? I am done with PSA

Posted By: Vanessa Phipps

I just got this back from PSA today. I just don't understand what they are looking for sometimes! Its centered, Its got one sharp corner and 3 soft corners which isn't that bad. The only flaw that I can see which would knock down the grade is the very minimal paper rub on the back above the card number. This card should have gotten a minimum of a 5. I give up! I am convinced that only the big wigs in the vintage card biz get the good grades. I cant afford to send them the cards then loose money on them when the undergrade them.

It looks a bit off-centered and maybe slightly diamond cut to me. And is that an abrasion on the paper by Joe's butt?

very nice color for the card.

No way it is a 5, but it is a very nice card that is accurately graded. I felt the same way as you when I first started submitting cards for grading. You'll catch on in no time.

The color is good and card is centered. This is before I sent it to PSA

If a decent card gets a 3 it's because there is a wrinkle there somewhere. Not uncommon on Leafs.
I was having lunch with a friend yesterday, he was PO'd because some cards that looked like 8's came back 3's and 4's. I took the first one and in about a minute saw a wrinkle that had knocked it down.
I'm not saying they are perfect, but it's not only the "big wigs" that get decent grades. After a few disappointments like this you'll know what to look for and the grades should be a lot closer to your expectations.

edited to say- is that a wrinkle in the upper right corner?

Fair grade. Dinged then pressed right upper corner hurts. Beautiful card though.

nice card whatever the grade. if you had that card at a show (raw),& you graded it as ex,and buyers could look at it(touch it,hold it),some may agree and some may disagree. it's all subjective. but putting it in the slab qualifies it as original and untampered. i broke this mize out of a psa 5 (ex) holder as i break all post war cards out of slabs and put them in binders. this card looks nm to me.

Vanessa -- Is that minor paper loss or abrasion on the top left corner of the larger scan? Regardless, that's a swell-looking card. Congrats!

Dennis -- That's one clean and sharp Mize. Wish mine looked like that.

Difficult to determine what the graders think at certain times. Maybe just a bad hair day?

What is the mark that is visible in the slabbed scan to the left of Joe's waist, that is NOT there on the pre-slabbed picture? Did something happen in the grading process?

Vanessa,

What is the spot b/t the J and the O on Joe? Looks like paper loss. If so that could be the culprit. Still a better looking card than most of my 3s.

That is a printer dot. I was told that that is quit common. Maybe that is one of the mark offs on the card?

Vanessa, send an email to Joe Orlando with the pre- and post-slab scans and let him know what happened. He's usually good about replying quickly.

Four round corners, o/c top to bottom 80/20; wrinkles around corners--looks like a 3 or a 4 to me without any other problems.

is the scan of the raw card from eBay? The marks may have been hidden.

I highly doubt that happened during the grading process.

Neal-
Don't doubt it too much, I've had a few cards smashed by PSA in the grading process. A '15 Cracker Jack Lajoie went from a 5 (it had a cracked holder, and I sent it in to be reholdered) to a 3. A couple of others that were undergraded were resubmitted (not something I've done more than a handful of times, but when it's really really off I'll throw it in a submission) and bent in the process and came back 3 grades lower.

but I just can't see print dots magically appearing after the grading process.

It also looks like the two below his bat are more pronounced, so maybe those were there to begin with.

In any event, still a very nice colorful card of Joe D.

It looks like your card has a crease through the middle of the card. It starts just above the bat knob, runs through arm, drops a little, and then shoots off to the left edge. There's also a crease in the area above the bill of his cap.

Those corners alone look like a PSA 4 at best. Sorry, but I think its more likely PSA got it right than wrong on this one.

that this one was graded accurately. The centering top to bottom is way off, but it's still definitely a beauty!
