Default Opinions on Chicago pennant

I am inexperienced in the ways of pennant collecting, and was hoping for thoughts on the item pictured below. Obviously it lacks any specific identification as a baseball item, such as a team nickname or graphic. While it's a little beat up, I think it will display well and the price is right.

So my questions:

- What era (looks ~40's to me)?

- Could this be a baseball-related item despite lacking identification as such?

- Even if not, would you add such an item to your collection?

Based on the color, I am thinking University of Chicago. Their teams are known as the "Maroons".

Might be related to the Chicago Cardinals (1920 - 1959). Good luck.

Those are the University of Chicago's colors. I bet it predates the 1940's and is from before they got rid of their athletics.

Chicago, my Alma Mater, pulled its football team out of the Big Ten in '39 and withdrew its basketball team from the conference a few years later. For the record, the Maroons have been involved in NCAA sports at the Division III level for the last 40 years. Crescat scientia, vita excolatur!

Thanks for the opinions. Commendable knowledge of your alma mater's sports history Mark -- I'll let you know where to find the pennant if you're interested!
