Default 1914 B18 Blankets question (need help on deadline)

Posted By: don fluckinger/SCD Standard Catalog

Hi gentlemen.

Need help on one of my many deadlines for the standard catalog.

Can someone who knows B18s tell me whether or not there is a legitimate King Cole (red infield) blanket or if it's just a color error and not a true variation?

WHether it gets added to the catalog or not hangs on verification from one of you....so thanks!

Don, all I've ever seen were blue or green infields with the blue seemingly more numerous than the green. Where did you hear about a red infield for that player?

I get emails forwarded from people in krause who had them forwarded to them so it's pretty anonymous now (but I can follow the bread crumbs). I get 100 misprint/print problem questions in this vein for every true error or variation I see. Is it possible this is real? I am very unfamiliar with these so I need someone who's enthusiastic about these to tell me it's not real (and why) or could be. Maybe I can produce a scan, too.

I got the Robert Edward Catalog in front of me with a Cobb Red Infield on p144 up for bids, Reserve 2,000.estimated value 4,000/8,000. If there can be a cobb, is COle that much of a stretch to imagine?

You have a point. And the red infields that are known bring a huge premium, but all of the other red infields listed in your catalog have more than one example extant don't they? That said, I have never seen a Cole red infield.

That's the thing. it's not insignificant. COle is a common so the red would theoretically be priced at $800 (Cobb, $15,000). I'm getting a scan, it will take several days. IF it looks legit like the REA Cobb pictured in the catalog, I think I should put it in? I could hold out util I see or hear of 2-3 more of these, too, but these blankets are a lot less common than, say 1955 Topps so it could take a long time before we hear of another one if no one already has one in their collection.

Anyway, thanks for staying up with me here and helping me think this out (while this Felix kid spoiled my man Dice-K's Fenway debut with a very nice 1-hittah on the radio)

If you get a high quality scan of a red infield, I would definitely add it to the guide, unless it looks like someone has used a Crayola on it

i have handled a lot of b18's over the years.

it has always been my understanding that all the red infields were "printing errors" and not issued red by design.
however, they (and many other printing errors) are catalogued. if the scan of the cole looks legitimate, i would consider it a "real" variation and list it as such.

and btw, the red infield cobb in rea is exquisite.....one of the best preserved red cobbs i have ever seen.

We own 6 of the red infields, and have seen maybe a dozen more over the last 10 years. We've never seen a red infield Cole, in any condition. Not sure if that helps, but we have been looking pretty carefully in that time... thanks!
