Default Toughest Hi Grade Insert Set - Deckle Edge Post Yours!

The 1969 Topps Deckle Edge Insert set has to be the most difficult set to collect in high grade. The set checklist shows the set has 33 cards - but #11 and #22 in the set contain 2 players, making a total of 35 cards in all. Cards#11 show both Wynn & Wilhelm; #22 Staub & Foy (Wynn & Foy are the SP rarities in the set).

Combined with printing offsets, easily creased cards, surface blemishes & chipped edges on the back all make this a difficult set to collect in high grade. Only a small percentage of cards have graded Mint.

Topps issued deckle edge cards in number of years.......let's see your deckle edge cards! Be interested to see if we can get a full set of '74 Proof Deckle Edge cards on here.....I'm sure Al R has a full set.

Default Deckle Edge

I'd love to find a high grade Topps and/or OPC Brooks Robinson deckle edge. Like you mentioned they are usually OC or have chips in the deckle portion. I have a bunch of Brooks proof cards of these; seem to be a very common proof item.

Default Deckle Edge

Mark,

Did you pick up your proofs from the same collector/dealer? And are the proofs straight edged with a completely blank back?

Default 69 Deckle

There were prototype sheet for this set as well. Only the Yaz made it into the actual set. Both the 69 and 74 Deckle can be found cut from sheets with out the deckling

I picked up the proofs from a collector years ago that used to collect Brooks Robinson items then changed directions in his collecting interests. I believe the proofs that I have are just not deckled, just straight edge versions w/the backs the same as the regular issued cards. Likely just cut from a sheet so I guess they could be called proofs.

Great thread,

Here is my one and only graded Deckle a 74 Bench. Absolutely fell in love with this set once I got this card in hand.

Ralph,

Nice cards. I wasn't aware that these were printed on 3 types of cardboard (white (proof), cream (proof) and gray (production)). Interesting. We've seen this recurring theme of using 3 types of cardboard as test products in other notable sets though.

I like the prototype pictures. As a Tiger fan I notice Hank Aguirre among the photos. He was traded by Detroit in April of 1968. Since these are prototypes for the 1969 set and he was trade a year before, I wonder when Topps started on this set?
