Default Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown T206 -- Trimmed?

Posted By: T206Collector

I picked this one up at a show today. It was a little more than I would normally llike to pay for a T206 HOF'er, but I was really struck by the condition. My only question is, is that a bat ear? I'm worried it's been trimmed... Thoughts?

I did actually pick this up at a show today. It was stuck to the back of a Steinfeldt card. If I had had my druthers, I'd have rather had the Steinfeldt stuck to the Brown, but no such luck.

Maybe it's just hand-cut.

I bet if you sent it to PRO it would at least come back as an 8!

...submitting it to Topps for inclusion in their next Historical Artifacts trading card series. I think you could still get three swatches out of it...

I would like to make an offer on it, but want to make sure there is no writing on the back. Can I see a scan of that please?

Sorry T206 Collector, you never said it was a blank back. I needed the Pirate back to complete my set.

Default Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown T206 -- Trimmed?

The response from collectors to this new sensation in tobacco card collecting has been phenomenal. I have had not one, not two, but three hundred different price requests -- each collector seemingly willing to outdo the previous in price. As a result, I have decided to auction this scrap of card in the next MastroNet or REA auction. My only question is, where am I likely to get the most cash for my scrap, so to speak?

Moreover, I did go with PRO to have the card graded, and they were also so impressed by this piece of Mordecai Brown ephemera. They have told me that they are willing to certify that it was from the private collection of Mordecai Brown himself on the slab. They are dubbing it the "Three Fingers Collection" -- the first and only of its kind. It seems, Brown didn't like the fact that American Tobacco was putting images of his disfigured hand on trading cards for young children to see, and so he spent his life tearing up his own cards and burning them. This is the only shred known to survive.

Finally, when I showed this card to Mr. Mint over the weekend at the show in White Plains, NY, he practically wet himself with delight over seeing such a rare specimen. He offered me three of his bobblehead dolls and fourteen Mr. Mint autographs. When I responded that I wanted four bobbleheads and a jar of Mr. Mint brand peanut butter, he cursed me, told me I knew nothing about scrap tobacco and that I should throw my entire collection of tobacco cards away in a dumpster outside of his office in New Jersey, on Tuesday afternoon, between the hours of 4:00 and 5:00pm. I told him that I would, but that I thought I could get more than nothing for my T206 collection. He laughed and said that he was doing me a favor because, and I quote, "images of players on cardboard would never catch on." He may have a point...

This thread reminded me that when I used to set up at shows, I would have a blank piece of cardboard (the size of a modern card) in one of those 1/2 inch blocks of plexiglass along with a price tag of $12,000. I used it as an attention grabber to get them to at least slow down when passing my table.

When asked, I would tell people it was a scarce Pete Rose blank back blank front rookie card. It was sad how many people didn't "get it", shook their heads knowingly like they had heard of it or responded with serious murmers about the price. Oh well.... who knew that I coulda sent it to PRO.
