Does anyone have any collecting goals for the upcoming year? I'm going to try and get a 1952-69 Topps Mickey Mantle set done! How about you guys?

Hard to say, as I debate about downsizing to essentially types only on my Topps test, insert and oddball collection (I am expanding the type collection to include all sports and non-sports cards issued by Topps thru the end of the 70s). If I do that, then I'll be adding more type cards (duh), probably from 48-56 for now. I still will keep adding to the Brooklyn Dodgers Topps and Bowman collection though. If I answered this a week ago, it would have been a different answer!

I will keep plugging away on T206 and buying old copies of The Trader Speaks. I might expand my E card and Obak collections as well.

I am amazed how much I keep shifting around in my collecting tastes after all these years.

Goal #1 is to find the last 2 Topps Venezuelans (Cardinals of course) that I need to end a 10 year search.

I'd like to scratch at least 1 Topps Test Issue off my want-list.

I'd also like to finish off my 1950s needs with some Dixie Lids, a Royal Dessert, 3 Star-Cals, and a Wilson Weiner.

Oh and find a bunch of bread labels at a garage sale too.

Randy

I'm hoping to find the Allen/Barnes/Cantrell/Strong and the Howley LePresse issues.

Missing 9 Alerta premiums.

Going to continue trudging away on the Police Gazette supplements and the Harper's weekly woodcuts.

Looking for Blum's Bulletins of Alexander, Daubert, Donovan and Grove.

Still need a few from the M101-2, M101-7 and M101-8 sets.

Hoping to track down some of the 29 Tip Top Weekly issues with baseball covers that I know I need. Also, hoping to get cover info on the 410 issues that I haven't seen, which will probably end up adding to the list of baseball issues.

Looking to add to the 435 Baseball Magazine premiums that I have so far, only 300 or so to go.

plan to acquire at least one card from America's Most Obscure Want List, postwar baseball division. What that card will be we cannot say since someone in the group accidentally misplaced the List last week. However, we are confident that with the coming great depression we will acquire something on that list, whatever our precious was, for a pittance in one of our Cheetos fuled late night last eleven second ebay bidding coups.

Or I could just keep looking for a 1954 Bowman Williams that appeals to me at the right price and time.

Happy New Year To All!!!

I'm looking to finally complete my Sid Gordon collection. I'm down to the final 4 cataloged "cards". I still need the following:

1952 National Tea Bread Label
1953 Marshall Merrell Braves Portfolio (both poses needed)
1977 John B. Anderson NY Teams

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2008 was a good year for my Sid Gordon collection. I was able to acquire:

1949 NY Giants Photo Pack
1952 Northland (Bread for Energy) Bread Label
1955 Robert Gould All Stars Card

My goal is to knock a few types of my want list, without spending a fortune to do it. I made a descent dent in the list this year, but there are still a number of types I'm missing, including:

1949 Baas Cheri-Cola
1952 Central National Bank of Cleveland
1949 Lummis Peanut Butter
1964 Meadowgold Dairy
1952 National Tea Labels
1953 Pictsweet Braves
1948 Safe T-Card
1958 Shillitos Boys Shop
1960 Armour Meats Denver Bears
1950 Bush & Hancock/Oak Hall Roanoke Red Sox
1957 Chattanooga Lookouts Team Issue
1967 Chevron/Uniroyal
1963 Milwaukee Sausage
1960s Sunnar Ayr Farms
1962 Supertest Gas
1964 True Ade/WGR Bisons
1952-3 Vancover Capilanos

To pick up a 63 Topps Pete Rose rookie either psa6 or 7. Couldv'e just had the perfect 7 but was about ten minutes to late on pulling the trigger. Also want to get a bowman Ted Williams and Playball Williams as well. And maybe get the 1959 Fleer Ted Signs to complete my set.

I just completed the '62 Bell Brand Dodgers set (waiting for the last few back from SGC) so I'll be starting either the '61 Bell Brand set or the '60 or '61 Morrell Meats Dodgers sets.

To the thread starter Doug, good luck on your Mantle mission. Just wondering how you are going to go about it, do you have a plan or just winging it. Going for certain grades, pick them up as you find them or go in a certain order.

I already have the '52 out of the way although I'd like to have them all in EX or better so I may sell it and save for another. I'm probably going to try to go in order so that way I get the most expensive ones taken care of first.

Wow Doug I just noticed your 52 Mantle in your Mickey post, very nice card. When I was a kid I used to fantasize about a couple things constantly, one being stranded on an island with Bo Derek and her braids and the other getting in a time machine and going back to the local drugstore in 1952 and buying all the packs of 52 topps. This was around the time Mr. Mint had his big 52 find and was selling mint Mickeys for 1000.00 each, which seemed like 100k at the time, which is about what they are worth now lol. Anyways, back to topic, the other big card I need to get this year is a 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson to complete my Topps run of him.

Nice variety of goals in this thread.

Looking to finish off my Yaz collection:

1972 Topps Cloth Test
1973 Topps Pinup
1973 topps Comic

Also looking to complete Redman Red Sox team sets from 52-55 that I have put off till this year (maybe).

Default Follow up!

It's almost October and I figured it would be fun to see how far everyone that chimed in this thread has come so far or if they finished their projects for the year early. As far as my 1952-69 Topps Mantle run is going, I should have the '50s taken care of by the end of the year, but I may have to save the 60s as my goal for next year.

Very modest goals:

1. Finish 1952 Bowman set (currently halfway done, with all of the HOFers except Mantle and Berra)
2. Acquire a playing-days card of one of the following: Ruth, Gehrig, Johnson, Wagner, Dimaggio

I've had a bit less disposable income for cards this year (thank you, Terminator) but picked up two '61 Bell Brand Dodgers worthy of submission to SGC. I hope to pick up two or three more shortly and submit them for grading. My ultimate goal is a nicely centered set graded SGC 80.

I was reasonably close to what I predicted. I added some nice T206 cards and filled in a few Brooklyn Dodgers team sets. Also picked up a bunch of Topps types, including some test issues. Didn't add any E's or Obaks though. Next year looks similar; I may consolidate a bit more of the non-core stuff to clear out some room but status quo otherwise.
