Default Anyone surprised by the prices boxing has been getting lately?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/141667569904

I cannot believe what this Pacman RC went for. $1,080.00. More than the Mayweather in PSA 10.

And this 1935 Joe Louis:

I wasn't even close and I am usually pretty solid at handicapping the outcomes of auctions for boxing cards.

PWCC also had a group of low grade European Clay/Ali cards sell for really strong prices.

Last night we had an E78 Jack Johnson. $2,313. The seller had no idea what it was; must be over the moon:

Default boxing cards

I don't typically swim in the deep end of prices. I'm slowly working on my t218 boxer subset. However, even prices here seem to be up. I used to regularly find nice raw examples for $4-$6. Now everything but beaters seems to be up around $10.

The Paquiao PSA 10 is definitely crazy. Especially if you consider the fact that there were at least two uncut cards (still in the issue of Japan World Boxing) that sold in the past year each for around $200.

That was then; this is now. You could also pick up a Mayweather RC for a fraction of the current market price.

The Manny in a PSA 10 has sold for more in the past. There was a sale in Nov of 2013 for $1,375 and another one in May of 2014 for $1,250.

I was especially interested to see what the Tyson in a true Italian version would bring in a PSA 10. I purchased mine from the collector who sold the Pacquiao last April and was excited to see it bring $5,100.

it doesnt have as much to do with boxing as it does with the "10" grade phenomenon of athletes with a high profile name. The Rock Dwayne Johnson college football "rookie card" sold for 2293 dollars in a grade 10 recently and its obviously a lot cheaper than that in lower but still nice grades. These grade 10 cards attract the investors who might not otherwise be boxing or football fans to invest in these cards. some of the buyers are regular collectors but some aren't so they fight over the '10' grade cards.

The first public sale of the 1994 Bumble Bee Miami Hurricanes Dwayne Johnson in a PSA 10 was April 11th 2014. The hammer price was $4,228.07.

That would be a great explanation, Travis, except that the Louis was a raw card and the Johnson was clearly vg at best. No, I think prices are finally rebounding for quality material after several years in the cellar. Prices are also up in other sports.
