DS, that Connie Mack blotter is awesome. Never seen it before.
I just picked up this Nebraska Indians real photo postcard from a lurker here on the Net54. Possible one of the players from the printed postcard as you can see the player is wearing that exact uniform.

Nebraska Indians Postcard
Dan, that is an awesome RPPC. I remembered seeing your colorized team one before, but I didn't realize they played in those Indian style fringed uniforms - pretty neat.

Dan,
That is a great photo. That type of action shot would look great with any player in it. When you factor in the era, the photographic equipment available, the incredible uniforms, and the uniqueness of the team, you have an even more fantastic picture. Congrats on getting it. Perhaps you can blow up the team picture and try to ID the player. Best, Mark

Not a big deal but since I've been trying to watch the money lately I decided to pick up something small that I've wanted for some time. A nice first edition copy of The Glory Of Their Times. Not signed or anything like that, but I've wanted to read it for quite some time. Maybe someday I'll replace it with one that has some signatures in it.

Glory of Their Times
A wonderful book, a classic.. I am sure you will enjoy it. There is also a Glory of Their Times record album with the players speaking on it. Not easy to find in nice condition but keep a look out for it. There are usually a couple on ebay. A great companion to the book.

I started reading the first few pages...and I'm already hooked. This is the type of book you should be reading while sitting in your memorabilia room.

I reread GOTT at a bookstore a few months ago. I need to get the audio again, to have in my car, tho not all the players in the book are represented in the audio. Simply a timeless classic.

Brock, is that Leon's quarter on the padding? That's a nice addition that baseball fan can appreciate. As a Red Sox fan, I may ask to come over on my next swing through upstate NY. Banging my head against a hard wall has grown tiresome!

Three I League ball
Research showed this ball is from the 1938 Evansville Bees. The Pres stamp on the ball, Tom Fairweather (37'-50') is from the same era.
Some of the players went on to A-AAA or PCL and Cali leagues. |

Ryan, Oisk, Wilson & Vandy- April has been berry, berry good to me!
April has really been an exceptional month for outstanding pickups for me!Many thanks to Jimmy (The King of Clout) for allowing me to add the great vintage signed color snapshot of Ryan outside of Shea in 1968! Jimmie is the true epitome of an an unselfish collector. For those of you that don't know me, I am an advanced Ryan collector of over 38 years. When he posted this picture last year I started drooling like Pavlov's dog!!
I also have been fortunate to pick up 2 great no-hitter tickets: 1) A great vintage stub to Carl Erskine's 1st no-hitter on 6/19/52 at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn- only 7,732 in attendance! 2) A perfect full, unused ticket to Jim Wilson's no hitter on 6/12/54 at Milwaukee. I also picked up two great vintage wire photo's from Johnny Vander Meer's 2nd consecutive no-hitter in 1938 on 6/15/38 (also the 1st night game at Ebbets Field). The 1st photo is an action shot and the 2nd is Mom giving Vandy a congratulatory kiss afterwords. These are great complimentary pieces to my tickets from his 2nd no-hitter. Very cool!! |

Not a new purchase, but a new find. These were packed away and forgot about 20 years ago. I thought I was opening up a box of misc baseball cards and turns out I had some early 70's bobble heads and also several early 70's 7/11 slurpee baseball cups. Here's the bobble heads.

a few from Henry Yee
Pics now in hand officially count as pickups.
I know it isn't pre war, but it is still pretty cool. Did some research on the pic. Dated 5/67 against Cubs at Shea. Mets played Cubs at Shea on 4/20/67. No games at Shea against Cubs in May. Seaver's first start was 4/13 against Pirates at Shea. So this pic dates from Seaver's second ever ML start on 4/20.

I got this reprint copy of the 1927 Yanks Team from Spring Training off of ebay. It's not a high value item, but it is significant for me.
It shows one of the ST team pics from 1927. This matches exactly with the team pic I got in the group of 1927 ST snapshots I picked up earlier this month. First pic is the new one. Second pic is a close up of snapshot. Third is high res pic of same snap. You can see the pic is almost exact, except for some hand placements and the angle of the photograph. I do think this proves the pics are from 1927. I also think I might have a very rare snapshot. Has anyone else ever seen a team picture snapshot? The guy must have been lucky enough to be there on the same day.

Mark V- who is that old timer in the photo with Gehrig? Thank you.
I have a guess: is it Bobby Lowe (another four homers in one game guy)? Last edited by barrysloate; 04-26-2010 at 04:51 PM. |

Barry,
That is exactly correct. This the write up from the Hyee auction A Vintage 1932 ORIGINAL Photograph issued by the Detroit News depicting New York Yankees star Lou Gehrig with old-timer, Bobby Lowe of the Boston Beaneaters. RARE 5” x 6” period photograph taken when Gehrig’s Yankees were in Detroit where Lowe lived and the Detroit News took the opportunity to take this photograph of the pair. Lowe was the 1st player ever to hit 4 home runs in one game (on May 30, 1894, doing it in consecutive at-bats). A few days ago, Gehrig became the 1st American League player to accomplish the feat. Mark

Thanks Scott, I really like the shot too. It really feels like your sitting in the park.
Also, Dynarl great photo of the field and players. I'm wondering, is the guy walking in the stands wearing a tall white hat a vendor? Here are a couple of other original negatives that I have of the stadium both from their 1940 AL Championship season First is a regular day game, I like how the sun is coming in and the sweet hats on the fellas. Second, is a shot from behind the plate during Game 3 of the World Series vs. the Cincinnati Reds Last edited by 3and2; 04-29-2010 at 03:57 PM. |

Picked up a late 1930s game used glove that belonged to Whitey Hilcher. 1931-36 Reds, and then a few years before the war in the PCL. Has part of his nameon the back were he stenciled it on.
Collecting Goldsmith equiptment, I filled a big gap by getting a Goldsmith brand glove that was game used. Here are some pics, cant wait for this one to arrive. |
