Ah, ok. So no know football ones from 1925. Sounds like these are pre-production samples to get players to agree to allow use of their image.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming ....

Dutch Hendrian was an early NFL player and also appeared in 158 movies as an actor. He played for the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and Rock Island Independents.

No dups, it took me a long time too. I tried to get them with full borders so SGC would give them a numerical grade.

Great stuff, Carl. I was originally going to try and put some 1940-41 Champ Stamps Wheaties in my display case too but ran out of room. Didn't even come close to getting all of my 1935-36 Wheaties items in as it is.

I may redo this case as a 1940s-50s Wheaties display at some point in the future but just enjoying it like it is for now.

What is the one that looks like a football field that you've included with the Big Ten Wheaties set? I've never seen that one before!

I bought it from an elderly gentleman who said he purchased it when a old local drug store was going out of business about 40 years ago. It is really, really heavy and the glass is thick. It has an old push button light switch on the back but no lights were attached. I plan to put lights in the display case some day and hook back up the old fashion push button switch to use them.

No maker mark on it that I can find.

Thanks...be sure to use LED lights when you're wore it so stuff also want fade. Great display (and cards, too)!

It's a football field, maybe part of the Big 10 Football game, but I found it included in a collection with the others I have depicted

While its not in very good shape, this is a very difficult Thorpe postcard to find so I snagged it. Carlisle, PA held a celebration for Thorpe and Tewanima when they returned from the Olympic games and these were distributed to advertise the event. Note that the postmark on the PC is the date of the event which I think it pretty cool!

From the description, it sounds like they had quite an event!

Awesome pick up. Jeff. I saw it on eBay, and was watching it. I am a Thorpe fan, so I have always liked that postcard. One of the items at the top of my want list is the postcard also produced to commemorate Thorpe returning to Carlisle after winning the Decathlon and Pentathlon that shows him putting the shot. I have lost out on a couple of auctions for that one in recent years.

Thanks Eddie. Good card for the want list! This PC might be more difficult but the one with Thorpe doing the shot put is definitely more popular and a very cool card. Like that one a lot.

Jeff, very nice! I can imagine if there was TV coverage of the '32 championship, they'd definitely play up a photo of the two coaches shaking hands back in college.

I thought you might come up with that angle being a Spartans fan and all.

The person who listed this item didn't mention Clark in the description. I get he's not George Halas but was pleasantly surprised when I dug into this to find out it was Potsy that Halas was shaking hands with. I had heard Halas broke his jaw (and I think later his leg) while playing at Illinois but didn't know the backstory between these two that season.

That's a nice bonus when the "other guy" turns out to have coached a team to an NFL title.

Even though I have a copy of a book, really a pamphlet about football, by Potsy from the 30s, I never specifically researched him. The only reason I wasn't surprised to see him at Illinois was because in Red Grange's bio, he actually says "On the football field I tried my darnedest to be like my two special heroes, All Americans Bart Macomber and Potsy Clark of Illinois."

Here's a great photo of Grange with one of his idols before an exhibition game in early 1926.

From the left: George "Wildcat" Wilson, Pop Warner, Red Grange
The gentleman on the far right wearing a sweater is Bart Macomber

I see another one of these is coming up in Heritage - I don't remember what I paid for this one, but I think it was less than the opening bid for Heritage - for the very first (or the second depending how you consider the 1932 Spartans Bears game) NFL Championship game.

Great pickups, Carl and Mike! Love those items.

I was able to snag these 19th century Yale photos recently.

1880 National Champs - Yale University (with Walter Camp)

1881 Yale Baseball (with Walter Camp)

Images of Fritz Pollard are hard to find. He was the first African-American to be named an All-American Halfback by Walter Camp. One of two AA players who played during the first season of the NFL. First AA coach in NFL history. HOFer.

This is a team photo of the 1915 Brown University team he was on.
