Thats how the cookie crumbles

I bought all my baseball cards at the neighborhood Utotem, I remembered the 1960 Leaf packs would break open easily because of the catseye marble inside the pack. The store manager would put the broken packs in a plastic bag and hang them on a hangar in the back of the store.I took advantage of this and thumbed thru the cards to find the pack I wanted.

On to the main reason for the post, in the back of my memory was recollections of getting some nasty cookie with some cards, after all these years I finally got around to looking up cards that came with cookies and discovered 63 Fleers came with a nasty crumbly cookie.

Fleer and Leaf were trying to get around the Topps monopoly with Marbles and nasty cherry cookies.

I'm sure, you guys already knew all this but though I would share my epiphany. Man, that cookie was nasty but I ate it anyway, I'm sure

Oh yeah, then theres the Dairy Queen statues that were given out with sundies, Seems I would always get an Al Rosen or Johnny Antonelli, just like I always got alot of Frank Malzone & Gus Triandos Armour Coins.

Hey Jerry! Love hearing the stories - my collecting started when I was 4 or 5 in 1969, and even now when I look at my (eclectic!) collection, I see so many things that bring back great memories!

Curious about the Tastee-Freez baseball figures - do you recall if they just handed you a figure when you bought a sundae, or were the figures somehow attached to the plastic bowl? I saw some other similar figures (non-sport) that they issued about the same time, and the base of those figures fit into a slot on the plastic bowl. Do you recall?

Jerry- I remember the 1963 Fleer cookies well! My local dime store Mohr's never had them but there was a washateria close to my grade school that had them in a vending machine.

A nickle was so valuable in those days I ate the cookie every time! Never found an Adcock all Summer.

Topps never had a real monopoly on baseball cards per se, but the contracts they asked players to sign ( Bowman as well) gave them the exclusive right to market the players likeness with gum or confections.

I still have unopened Leaf and Fleer 63 packs. At least the cookies were so bland that no one complains much about cookie stains

That's a great story! It seems like just about any product that could be marketed to kids, involved baseball and cards of some sort. Hotdogs, ice cream, cake, cookies, candy...it must have been fun to grow up in the mid to late 50's and early 60's! Being born in 64, all I remember is opening packs and getting disgusting Topps gum. That awful taste still lingers in my mouth.

A Big +1. Every set should contain a certain number of cards with gum and wax stains.

The Gum was for putting in your sisters hair.

Thanks for sharing! In the late 90's I won a pack of 1983 Topps as a door prize at a show. At the time, the 83' Gwynn was a hot card, I think it booked around $80. Long story short - I pulled the Gwynn and was so excited my brain apparently stopped working and popped the piece of gum into my mouth..now that was a nasty piece piece of gum!! All-in-all though, it was still a good day!

Thanks for the pics. I thought the pack would look a little wonky but it looks rather normal with the flat "cookie". Guess I was thinking "Double Stuff"

What I remember about the Taste-freeze figures is my local stand you had to buy a certain sundae to get the figure and from I remember they just handed it to you.
I would always ask for a mantle but they usually just had the common players. If I ever got a Mantle I don't remember it, but I do remember getting a Berra once.
Never saw any non-sport figures.

Picked up this Brooksie off ebay last night 12 dollars and change, can't beat that.
