Default Babe ruth 1915-1919 rookie/red sox era photos/memorabilia

Since the rookie Ruth is the new craze on the card side(rightfully so), I wanted to see what was out there in original Type 1 photography as well as other rare memorabilia. Type 1 photos of Ruth as a rookie are very very rare so I was hoping to see some here.

I will start it off with six of my 1915 rookie Ruth images below. I am always buying high end early Ruth images I might add

Here's an autograph book leaf signed by members of the World Champion 1920 Indians. Jack Dunn ("Dunn's babe") has signed at the top.

Steve:

Those St. Mary's Ruth images would be worth a fortune if they were original Type I's but unfortunately they are worth very little as later prints.

Great photos. I've shown this one a few times already, but here it is again. Circa 1919, I believe.

I'd like to see other Ruth rookie type 1 (original news service) photos if people have them. I know that they are very scarce. Here is mine: http://www.psacard.com/DNACert/I04937

It looks a lot like the post card seen here: http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/auction/2012/14.

Attached is the back of the photo where you can see the photography stamp and caption, indicating that the photo was taken ot September 30th, the day that the Red Sox took the American League. This is a cool link to a very simular photo that ran in the paper a day later on October 1, 1915. If you look closely under the photo you will see a copywrite line from the International Press: http://www.rarenewspapers.com/view/587997

Cool stuff.

Not a type 1 just a modern copy but a neat shot of the Babe's first spring training in 1915. I bought it from Smoky Joe Wood's son.

It is ridiculous how good those teams were. And what is even more impressive is how their roster changed from 1912 to 1918 while still maintaining the same high level of play.

Couple things

1. Man Ernie Shore was tall....can see why he lasted so long in majors/Minors

2. Went to BabeRuth Museum in Bmore ( his birthplace ). its not worth a road trip, unless you go to Camden Yards ( i now live in area) but something interesting....

i collect GU materal, and there was a "1910s Joe Jackson Bat, given to Ruth" = Donated by Ruth Family

a. Very interesting bat, however it was made between 1921-25. (Center Label), plus only had his last name

just like http://ownitnow.memorylaneinc.com/gallery.aspx?id=4158

same Last name ( Louisville stopped putting full name, after banishment

b. Ruth said he modeled his swing after Jackson...so makes sense

c. Would have been interesting to figure out when Ruth and Jackson met, in order to get the bat

Does anyone have any accounts of when Ruth and Jackson may have barnstormed or met, Post 1920?

Really amazing stuff, everyone. Seeing those shots of Ruth as a young kid is just something else.

I don't have much to post along the lines of memorabilia, but I have painted these two of him with the Sox:

I can't wait to do more!

Though I would normally take this opportunity to make fun of Ben in some way, for now I'll pass.

I will allow myself, however, to say that his Ruth photo collection is pretty much becoming the best on this planet. And that goes double for his shots of Ruth from the ol' Red Sox days. While the quantity might not be a large number, in terms of the importance of the image and the photographers associated with each shot, I can't think of anyone who has it cherry-picked better than Mr. Weingarten. He's definitely got a great eye. And, he's a good person to boot. Hanging out with him, Phil and Danny every time the National comes around is usually my favorite getaway of the year.

I would rather you just make fun of me.. I feel weird now.

Thank you Graig..you are a swell guy and a dear friend....gosh that was hard for me to say.

Anyway.... the national was awesome this year. It was full of many stories as in years past and hopefully many more to come. I hope I can find more Ruths...Now GO GET ROSIE!

I have already posted this in the September pickup thread so I apologize for the dupe post.

HOWEVER.. I thought the background on this game was really cool and really was unaware of it(star spangled banner/war/sutout by the babe ect). The photo, has the flag in the bottom right corner too which is a cherry on top. The photo is just over 5x7 matted like this below but does have a corner clip on upper left.

I am going to frame this one and looking for suggestions. Ayone??

Also, here is the background of game for those of you who missed the sept pickup post.

BABE RUTH TYPE 1 PHOTO OF 1918 WS, GAME 1. Ruth pitched this game(1-0 shutout). This series was the last one Boston Won for many years as we all know(HENCE-THE CURSE OF RUTH).

This had a bunch of black press ink/paint that came right off and matted out to this(just over 5x7). I am VERY happy with the result. I am not sure if I have seen an original of this other than this copy so VERY happy that it cleaned up! A great piece of history that I wil now protect

WIKIPEDIA:
"Game 1 of the 1918 World Series marked the first time "The Star Spangled Banner" was performed at a major league game. During the seventh inning stretch, the band began playing the song due to the fact the country was involved in World War I. The song would be named the national anthem of the United States in 1931, and during World War II its playing would become a regular pregame feature of baseball games and other sporting events. The winning pitcher of Game 1 was none other than Babe Ruth, who pitched a shutout.

1918 would be the last Red Sox World Series Championship until 2004. The drought of 86 years was often attributed to the Curse of the Bambino. The alleged curse came to be when the Red Sox traded the superbly talented but troublesome Babe Ruth (who was instrumental in their 1918 victory) to the New York Yankees for cash after the 1919 season."

PS: LOVE THE DUDE IN THE BACK LOOKING ON SMOKING.

Now THAT's funny! Ben, I can't say that I can fault your choice of frames or overall vibe...

Certainly that must be Martell's Cordon Blue cognac in the snifter, but what that that your smoking as far as the cigar (or whatever) goes?
HAHAHA!

I would have to go with a Flor de las Antillas Toro. We will keep the young lady nameless.

Ps: those national pickups are superb! I was lucky enough to see them in person...really cool.

Default Another 1915 image

From "Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Newspaper", Sept 16, 1915. Babe is shown along with Foster, Wood, Cobb, Veach and Crawford. Listed as "Baseball's Big Six".

Default I picked up a monster

This is a VERY VERY RARE 1918 RED SOX TEAM PHOTO. It is the only one I have come across thus far. It is obviously the start of the curse until this year in Fenway. I am very very happy to add to my collection and my Game 1 WS Ruth from 1918. My scanner sucks but still tried to blow up the Ruth(incredible shot of him and crystal clear/LOOKS LIKE A BADA$$).

Happiest I have been in awhile for a pickup.. haha.

WS GAME 1 RUTH PITCHING.

Understatement of the year!

Man, that one is a beauty, and what a great companion piece! Your collection already has so many Monsters, it's like something out of the Godzilla franchise. This one should feel right at home

To all who showed their 1915-1919 Ruth's, great photos, talk about eye candy.
Great thread Ben.
