Default E94, E97, E98...complete sets at their cheapest?

Posted By: Dave F

As most probably know I'm trying to do an E98 set...pretty much complete beater, as I have some really ugly cards

After seeing what the E98 lots went for in the Mastro auction I'm curious as to anyone's opinion what it costs today on the lowside to actually complete this set, or the E94 or E97 sets (which I'm debating about being my next project, 1 of the 2)

Going off memory..but on the E98 lots, the 27 out of 30 card lot went for a bit over $6000 I think and the 24/30 lot went for about 11k, I am almost to the point of having 24/30...but I don't have 11k in it...is there just that much of a premium in someone buying or selling that many at one time? Mine however so far doesnt have Cobb or Wagner which I know make a big difference...

So, bottom line what is the opionon on the cheapest E94, E97 and/or E98 complete sets you can put together...if all are beaters (SGC 10's, a few authentics maybe?)

My random out of my butt guesses- E94- $15k? E97 $12k? E98 8k?

My cards are mostly 10s and AUs with a few nicer ones.

My E97 set (without Young and Sullivan variations) cost $8250 to put together.

My E94 set minus Wagner has cost $5600, but I had a lot of luck there.

My E98 set minus Cobb, Mathewson and Wagner has cost only $1200 so far, so another $3K + there for the set.

These were all put together within the last five years. The E98s came earliest, before the big jump in prices, but most of the 94s and 97s were bought in the midst of the boom, which seems to have leveled out

Conclusions? You could do it for a little less than those figures if you buy opportunistically when you see good buys.

Dave,

Sorry to somewhat hi-jack your thread, but I was also interested in what the board members opinions are on the e93 set. I have been stuck on 24/30 (need Wagner,Plank) for quite some time. Mine range from F-VG. What price range would you give for a complete set in lower grade on e93's?

It does seem that some lower grade E-cards have leveled off a bit, but I haven't followed them as closely as I have in the past.

Mike

Tim-
Wow...I would say you did really well at those levels of money invested per set

Mike-
No problem...I wasn't trying to necessarily limit the discussions to anything one set in particular, those were just the sets I was personally curious about

Hey Dave, if you plan on breaking up those e98s, i'd be interested in the e98 Mathewson. I'm trying to collect as many as I can. Its my favourite pre war card

Brett-
When I get them all...I'll then have to break them up...but not beforehand.

Dave- you certainly have the fun of the "chase" down. I know for many the "chase" is a lot of, if not most of, the fun. What we need to do is find you something to chase that is really difficult to complete. That way you can have a longer race ......take care....and happy hunting....

mike,

since all of the e93s are readily available and there are really no scarce(r) card than the rest, the value is heavily weighted on a few of them...i.e. cobb, wagner, matty, young. the next tier would be plank, lajoie, joss, waddell...then the rest of the hof'ers and commons. goodwin had a whole set recently and that did well above my expection.

i've been putting together the e98s and e97s concurrently. i've been buying the e97 commons at around $100 for psa/sgc 1s and $150-$200 for psa/sgc 1.5s-2s. unlike some other sets there are e97 commons that are tougher than others besides the known scarcities. from tracking e94s the 1s can be had at $110-$150 and 2s at $175-$225. with these cards it's always way cheaper to buy raw than graded.

estimates psa/sgc 1-2 set...8k e97s 10k e98s doable...e94s 12k (based on the beater e94 cobb psa1 selling for around $700).

So you guys think I won't get hurt on my e98's (complete set and about 25 duplicates) that I'm into for $65? (Picked them up as a single lot with a bunch of e90-3's, e101's and e102's back in 1976)

e-97 would be cheapest to compile just on sheer lower demand one would think.

I would put Brown and probably Chance at a higher teir than the low-teir HOFs. In E93 I would group them like this:

Top teir: Cobb, Wagner, Matty, Young
2nd teir: Lajoie, Plank
3rd teir: Brown, Chance, Joss, Waddell, Evers
4th teir: all other HOFs
5th teir: all commons

I agree with Jim on the e93s. Chance rates a little higher because its a bit tougher to find than some of the other HOFers. Brown rates higher simply because the card seems to be fairly popular and in demand - particularly if its a nice looking Brown.
