i hope this isnt "taboo" since the auction isnt over yet, but i feel confident that it wont blow anyone's chances at winning since it has a buy it now...but doesnt this card look a little trimmed on the top???? did they only get an 8 because of the player???

I think the slant cut at the top may be approximately matched by the reverse slant cut at the bottom. To me, if the two edges are parallel to each other I'm less inclined to think trimmed, even if they are not parallel to the image border. It's when one edge is slanted to the image but the opposite edge is square to the image that I figure trimming.

This one looks close, but I think I see a roughly corresponding angle on the bottom.

Plank got a bad haircut. I think the card looks cut too.

Based on the scan it looks pretty worked over. Bottom right corner has something unnatural or not original going on at a minimum. Edges don't look right either. Interestingly enough the cert number after it is a 14 CJ Matty PSA 5. I checked the certs for several cards prior and after that and they are all late 50's and early 60's $100 cards.

Just playing devil's advocate here (because I don't know enough to judge whether the card is trimmed), but if the holder is legitimate and the card really was given a 6, don't you think that because it's a Plank, PSA would have been even more careful when assigning a grade because of the scrutiny the card/grade would be sure to receive?

Hi guys..I am new here...long time collector...board lurking....I am a guy who pays a lot of attention to things that go on in this hobby behind the scenes...I have a large collection and consider myself to be a paper expert who is classically trained in the field....I believe this card exhibits all of the caracteristics of a card that is altered...just my opinion, but the top appears trimmed and the bottom right corner has been rebuilt...again, just my opinion....WHO IS THE OWNER OF THE CARD???

Rob you are correct. The "ultra high-end" cards do get scrutinized more carefully but when found they are not altered they are known get very generous grades. It’s just part of the biz.

Does anyone know the provenance with this card?

As we all know, unless it's a hack job it is almost impossible to tell if a card is trimmed from a scan alone. I sure would like a chance to examine it (and the Wagner 8) for about five minutes .

kevin, in 5 mins that wagner PSA 8 would be in my back pocket in the back seat of a taxi going about 130 to the nearest airport...when i went to the nationals in anaheim i was pretty impressed with the 2's and i saw...with that 8, i'd have to change my drawers from excitement

i'm thinking someone with some "juice" must of had that card graded, if i sent it in and it had that lower corner, i probably wouldnt have gotten a 6.

This looks a little like the one Sotheby's just sold, but even if it isn't that one went for 105K.

I guess we are to assume that Sotheby's left 120K on the table. This guy must have some special customers that know him but never heard of Sotheby's.

Barry,

If you are referring to the one from the June 07 auction it looks nothing like it. It looks familiar but I don't recall where I saw it.

Looks good to me.....maybe a bit of a "diamond cut", but certainly not a trim job. Considering Plank's scarcity and the Wagner prices. it might be a bit of a bargain. As for the corners...remember it's a 6 not an 8!

thanks for adding the scan...

diamond cut or not, with that lower corner looking the way it does, does it deserve a 6 ??

and now that the scan is a little larger what about the upper left corner does that look funny to anyone besides me?
