Default Uncut W553 strips

Posted By: Kyle

This auction just ended. I thought for sure I had found a steal of a lot, and could get it for under $500. Boy was I wrong.

All my research on these failed to result in any other auctions/images of the uncut strips. Pretty neat to see these. I can't even tell who everyone is on the sheets, maybe some uncatalogued players in the group?

Take care,
-Kyle

I never win these scrapbooks, and I bid way more than $500 but knew my chances were slim to none

Only 2 bidders were higher than my snipe of $1111, but my bid didnt even register..... oh well

These auctions dont slip through the cracks unless they dont picture the cards.

Once I saw the clear picture of that page of W553's I knew it was going into the 4 figure range.

In eBay's early years I would have won that lot for $65.77 or something

The players pictured in the W553 scan are Cochrane, Frisch, Gehrig, Goslin, Grimes, Grove, O'Doul, Ruth, Simmons, and Hornsby. All part of the 15 card set. I should know, since I won the lot. I probably would have slept better tonight if you wouldn't have posted it on this board...

Lovely Day...

Not a problem, I understand and you are right about the old days. Ten years ago, I would have won this lot for $66.27.

Lovely Day...

I was merely posting the auction so people could see pictures. You could have played dumb and not told anyone you won them. Congrats on the victory.

Nice pickup IGGY....I upgraded to a Ruth for my type card not too long ago. Not sure if I have seen these type strips before...almost looks like they have places between them as "cut" lines....

Hey Kyle, if you ever meet my mother-in-law. She would be the first to tell you, that it would not be much of a stretch for me to "play dumb." With that in mind, I really showed her!!!

To Rhys, Kyle, and Leon thank you for the kind words. By the way, just like blunder and his upside-down Cy Young I already have the scrapbook in my possesion. I had it sent via a transporter. I will be posting a pic tomorrow morning.

Lovely Day...

Can anybody tell me where Frisch and Hornsby are in this pic? Team IDs too, if known. I think the upper left corner is Frisch and upper right corner is Hornsby, but not sure. Thanks, Randy

From my old notes on the set, I knew these came in vertical strips but didnt know how many cards per strip. I remember a strip on ebay a few years back, but didnt make a note of the number of cards in the strip.

Since there are (now) 15 different known in the set, I dont believe the strips were originally issued as only 4 cards per strip. I believe they were broken up to fit on the scrapbook page.

Maybe 5 per strip or 10 per strip with some players double printed???

Outside chance, 4 cards per strip and we need to add a 16th player to the checklist???

PS. Left strip Frisch, Goslin, O'Doul, Simmons
Center Gehrig, Ruth
right strip Cochrane, Grove, Grimes, Hornsby

Frank, thanks for the IDs. Does everybody think that 1929 (SCD) is right for this set? Randy

The gap between NRMT and VG is much closer

VG cards will bring more than whats listed.
Red, Salmon, Blue-Green, Blue, Green tints will bring a slight premium over the more common B&W

Id say
Commons $150 NRMT, $100 EX, $75 VG
HOFers $250 NRMT, $150 EX, $100 VG

edited to say: I misread your post above, though you were asking about the book value.

As far as year.... I believe they picked 1929 because thats when other sets that use the same pictures were issued..... R316, R316 Large, W554, Leader Novelty Candy were all issued.
O'Doul (above) is shown with Philadelphia (played with them from 1929-30)

No wonder my snipe didn't even register, ALL of you guys saw these! I thought I had a shot at getting a great deal.

I was wondering if a board member did win them and I'm glad to find out one did. Congrats! I hope you enjoy them for while.

Thanks,

Andy

A few years back, I saw a "5" card strip. So, I'm assuming that is how they were issued. As mentioned, the ones in the scrapbook must have been cut to fit the book. But, I could be wrong?

Lovely Day..

Until I saw the close, which would have beaten my potential bid. Congrats and let us know how they come out of the scrapbook.

Dan should be punished for posting a second thread. I forbid you from buying anything I want to buy, and anything any other Net54 members want to buy.

Have a great day.
