Default November, 2023 Pickups

Only the Koufax actually arrived since the calendar changed, but I caught up on scanning the others.

Default 1970 Washington Senators D.C. DMV Traffic Safety - Nelson Yellow

This is the card that I just recently picked up that started me on the conversation about resurrecting the Vintage Baseball Card Catalog.

Dave Nelson, as I initially thought was only printed in the pink version. Val K. was gracious and I purchased the pink one from him. I had been conversing with Val regarding the Yellow D. Nelson I had found and purchased and he verified to me the other day that there is also a Yellow version of the 1970 Senators D. Nelson.

I found one and that is attached here. (I bought it on a flier thinking that I may end up getting snookered by the purchase. Which, seems to not be the case.). The Yellow Nelson matches perfectly with the other cards I have in my collection.

The comment in the catalog write up below states that there is only a pink version of Dave Nelson. Well, this is not the case as there is a first series of yellow printed 1970 Senators D.C. Traffic Safety cards that does have D. Nelson depicted.

The second series printing of the 1970 Senators D.C. Traffic Safety cards shows A. Rodriguez replacing the D. Nelson card.

I'm also of the opinion that the D. Nelson Yellow would be considered more 'rare' than the pink one. And I believe I am not the only one thinking this.

NOTE: I would expect that there are many here that already know a good deal of this information. This is just me becoming aware of this and sharing what I have found out.

Cheers,

Butch T.

Hattip to Val K. for this information to me. Which has now set me onto getting the uncut versions of these as well as the rest of the pink printed players.

Other than the D. Nelson card that I received from Val, I have never even seen any of the other 9 players printed in pink except in pictures.

Have had this one for about a year now. But I just sent it to sgc so it feels like a new pick-up.

Only one sgc has ever graded and of psas 4 it's the only one above a 1.

At least two different raw versions of this card have slipped through previous versions of my PC. Glad to finally add back in this nicer graded copy - which was a tad more affordable now in this down market.

Color and corners are the highlights here. It’s not without a touch of the print damage that typically plagues this issue, but it’s not near his face so doesn’t bother me.

Default Pickups

Was excited to pick up these two hall of famers at the Dallas card show.

And now my low grade (SGC 2-4) 56 Topps run starts!

Default 1970 Washington Senators D.C. DMV Traffic Safety Uncut - Nelson Yellow

Continuing my Senators pick ups for the month. This 1970 DMV Traffic Safety Uncut version with the Nelson Yellow was mislabeled as a 1971 DMV Traffic Safety Uncut sheet. So, a score for me IMHO.

Now, I'm looking for a sanely priced 70 Senators DMV Uncut version with A. Rodriguez instead of D. Nelson. The one on eBay right now is foolishly priced.

I will find one for sure, just a matter of time.

Default November, 2023 Pickups

Not new to the collection, but got these back from SGC this morning. All were cards I bought raw over the past few years. Very pleased overall; the 5 on the Carew is a bit of a gift I think given the corners - I was expecting a 3.5 or 4, but I’ll take it.

i have never really been a huge fan of 58s in general….

but that Snider is mesmerizing….especially in the black tux

something about the yellow in the background reminds me of the ‘33 Goudey Speaker card.

That’s a good looking 56 Mays .
Got this today - was actually a buy it now on eBay .
I like to print quality and mostly white borders for the lower grade .
The “oopsie” pen marks on the reverse don’t bother me much .
Thought it was a lot of Mays for the money .

It’s always a good day when you can find raw vintage priced to move at the card shop. This one won’t impress the centering purists, but otherwise a very clean ‘61 Aaron:

The 1970 Ernie Banks is especially delicious, because it doesn't really 'seem' off centered at first (and second) glance, and since the 1978 Reg-gie!! is one of the coolest cards ever - with that extra colorful flourish of the All Star shield - I thought it was a mere $19 well spent...

Geez-a-loo (no idea how to spell that, so I went phonetically)), I've always wanted a wickedly cool, old and weathered wooden table or chest to use as a backdrop for pictures of cards, and your Ryans set-up is awe-inspiring!!!!!! My Gawd!!!!!!!!!

Great stuff!!!!!

Nice group of cards and a great start, my only recommendation is to collect what speaks to you, get the highest grade/eye appeal you can afford, and have fun.

Listen to the voice in your head / your own drummer when trying to decide what you like, and what to collect in terms of vintage. It's far to easy anymore with things like N54, social media, Youtube, and collectors everywhere to see what all everyone else seems to be doing, and the next thing you know you are going broke trying to keep up with the Joneses.

The truth at the end of the day for 99% of collectors (those of us on a budget) is that nobody can have it all, so naturally if you have to pick and choose, it makes sense to pick a focus and specialize. That doesn't mean you can't type collect or occasionally stray - but like for me personally I used to sometimes fret over the fact that I couldn't afford a lot of macho, expensive high dollar pre-war cards. I finally gave up that silliness and realized in retrospect that beyond a certain age it's hard for me to identify with / get super interested in like 100+ year old cards anyway. Postwar vintage (1950's - 1970's) is much more my speed both in terms of what catches my eye, and what can fit into my budget on a regular basis. So be it.

There is no right way or wrong way to hobby. Be true to yourself first and foremost, and above all - have fun.

Thank you re: the Ryan grouping

And as for the table... I'd always been looking to buy a wickedly cool, old weathered wooden chest with some wrought iron features... never could find one... and then found this one discarded for free
