Default The Catch 22 of this board

Posted By: joe brennan

I'm sure not many auctions get by the eyes on this board, but here is my question. If I find something and alert this board of the item, I risk more bidding against it. If I dont find out about it, I risk serious under bidding and lose it any ways. This was the item

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=37597&item=5207189188&rd=1

My final bid was $75 and as you can see far under bid on it. If I would have known a Cobb post card was on another auction site now for over $500 I would have been more agressive.

So hence the catch 22. not much sales history to go by. Do I or dont I?

Joe, I feel your pain. Been there, done that also. The worst feeling is to have a rare card spotted in some off the beaten path auction and have someone come on the board and say: "Hey guys, look an E98 Cobb for sale and only 2 days left and the bid is only $150!" Then an avalanche of bidding ensues. So I know what you are talking about...

The good news is that within the next 6 months you will be able to get that card type (not that particular card but same type) for under $200. I sold one not too long ago, on ebay, and it brought about what this one did. They are actually fairly common relative to a lot of what we collect. $500 is a little steep but I am sure folks have paid it. I saw one at last years National and the dealer was asking about $1400 for it, touting it as his rookie regards

LOL...Ahhhh the joy of finding and the heart break of being discovered!!. Snipe high with no buyers regret I guess. But still the post card with the whole team for under $150 wouldve been a bargain...If I just would've known. I will still come here for advice but maybe not with auctions, that is till after they are over. Out

I think that as you continue to network with individual board members, through BST, the chatroom or general discussion, you'll probably eventually come across one or two that you share some common ground with and grow to trust. Whenever I find a card that I like, I show it to one of my friends from the board that I'd trust to not throw a bid down and upstage me. Getting a second or third opinion may not generate the exciting conversation that starting a thread about it in the forum would, but it would give you some valuable feedback from others that know you and your collecting interests fairly well - without drawing unnecessary attention to your card.

I hope to make friends with everyone on the board so they can share info to help me along the way. I know I will. Joe

Once you are known and the details of your habit are known, people will even start emailing you about interesting stuff they see that falls into your field. I wouldn't worry about it.

I've found that there are always a lot more eyes on the "prize" than you think.

A few months on here and you'll be able to answer a lot of your own questions anyway.

I asked the Board about the likely authenticty of a T206 O'Hara on ebay, and got a ton of responses -- some positive, some negative. I went with the positives, who I trusted, and came out way ahead on that one. I think there were two other board members who bid on the card, but I suspect they found it on their own. Still, I never would have bid on or won the card at a great price had it not been for the information from the board.
