Default 1919 Black Sox Book?

I'm looking for recommendations for a good 1919 Black Sox book. I'd like to read a book that includes newer research ... but ... a book that is also a fun/easy read ... if such a book exists :-) Any recommendations welcome. Thanks!

Jerry,

I highly recommend Gene Carney's Burying the Black Sox.
This book came out a few years ago and can be had for about $10.

https://www.amazon.com/Burying-Black.../dp/1597971081

It was written by the late Gene Carney who was a very close, dear
friend of mine. This book is a scholarly work, so you probably won't
find it fun/easy to read. However, if you're looking for newer and
factual research this is as good as it gets.

Best,

ErikV

I highly recommend The Betrayal: The 1919 World Series and the Birth of Modern Baseball by Charles Fountain.

https://www.amazon.com/Betrayal-Worl...odern+baseball

Released in October 2015. Fresh research, re-examines myths surrounding the issue and puts some excellent historical perspective around those events - the climate and circumstances in the years leading up to and following that season and that Series.

This book was a 2015 Casey Award finalist for best baseball book of the year.

I'm in the middle of this one right now. It's definitely not a light, easy read but it's very good.

Later research has shown this one to be inaccurate.

Default Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies so far! I'm leaning towards The Betrayal: The 1919 World Series and the Birth of Modern Baseball ... at the moment ... but will keep my options open. For anyone who has read The Betrayal ... is it an easy read? Again thanks for the feedback! Jerry.

I highly recommend Scandal on the South Side, edited by Jacob Pomrenke and published by SABR in 2015. You can get it through Amazon, but if you're a SABR member (www.sabr.org) you can download it free, or get a printed copy at 50% off.

Even if you don't want the book, you should be a SABR member!

Bill Lamb just wrote "Black Sox in the Courtroom" recently if you are looking for a book on the litigation after the fact.
Good, well researched read.

Default Books

I have finished reading "Burying the Black Sox", the excellent Gene Carney book mentioned above. If anybody is interested, and lives in the US, I'd be happy to give them my copy. It's definitely worn and read but it's all there and very readable.

I also have these books available for free:

Stealing Games (McGraw's Giants)
War on the Basepaths (Ty Cobb)
Fall From Grace (Joe Jackson)
The Bubblegum Card War (Topps/Bowman history)
America's Game (history of the NFL)

Just shoot me a PM if you're interested.
