Default Glendale show/Long Beach Flea...Scored big at both!!!!...Wild top down 5 days!!!

Weekend before last I drove my convertible down to Los Angeles...6 hour drive...I left at 5:00AM...got to downtown L.A. about 1:00PM...had lunch at the Pacific Dining Car...where a scene from Training Day was filmed...

Phew expensive!!!...had the baseball steak like Denzel told his partner to order...scalloped potatoes...coke....coffee and ice cream...$73.00 + a weak $10.00 tip...+ I didn't know if the valet got the $8.00 service charge so just gave him $13.00...equals a $96.00 lunch...ouch...Kinda takes the fun out of my hobby of exploring old school Los Angeles restaurants...

Next day I hit the Glendale show...early entry day $25.00...Combed it thoroughly but didn't find a whole lot...Then an antiques dealer I know who was there shopping it saw me and said he brought something for me...took me out to his car and showed me the greatest assembly of unused tickets to the 1927 Dempsey Tunney fight I ever expect to see...16 unused tickets from different locations around Soldier Stadium where the fight was held...all different priced...$40...$30...$25....$20....$15....$10....$ 5...all fronts and backs...WOW...So I bought it...that made my trip right there...

And I also got one of those Ted's Creamy Root beer signs...easel backed...Got one 25 years ago from John Spalding at a San Francisco card show at Mosconi Center for $100.00...and flipped it to Josh Evans for $200 at the same show...Finally got one back...but it wasn't $100 this time...

Hit the Long Beach flea hard...got there 5:30AM as they let the dealers in...Looked long and hard but nothing....then it hit...one of the best flea market finds I've ever made...Among some junky stuff on a table I spotted two matching Copeland Spode English football pieces....one a water pitcher that I already have....and a vase shaped larger piece that I think may be a wine cooler...$350.00 for the pair!!!!!!...I've never seen or heard of the wine cooler...I think it's pretty rare...

 photo 20150817_141948_zpse02qt247.jpg

Stayed in Redondo Beach that night...next morning went to the Kettle Restaurant in Manhattan Beach for my old favorite Crab Cakes Benedict...but gone down hill...$14 for mediocre boring...not good like it used to be...

 photo 1GALLERY_zpsxsykf7zb.png

Then for my finale as I headed home I made a detour thru south central L.A...gangland...top down wearing a red golf hat...I have a little hobby I like to see locations where movies were shot...I located the motel in the first Terminator movie where the two characters Sarah and Kyle hide out from Arnold...The Tiki Motel at 7301 Santa Fe Avenue, Huntington Park was where it was shot...in 1984 and it's still there...I didn't know it at the time but it's right on the border of the Florence and Firestone District of south central...

It was a pretty wild trip...five days went by like two I was so busy...This is the condenced version...I took a ton more photos!!

Thanks for sharing Carlton! Your storytelling is nearly as good as your pickups

I agree. I would have been out of the Dining Car faster than you can say "thirty two dollar hamburger"! Who the heck eats at those places?

Always great to read your stories, Carlton.

That Dempsey/Tunney collection is amazing. Also, that's the first real 'Creamy Root Beer' sign I've seen - I have a fake metal one that I love.

Always love the show/trip photos Carlton. The Ted's Root Beer...you got that from my friend who was selling at the show.

The dealer who sold me the Dempsey Tunney piece bought this little motorcycle...I think it's either an amusement park ride of some sort or a front of supermarket coin-op piece...someone added the Indian Motorcycle decal on the tank which mucks it up a little I think.
