William J. O'Neil... a beater of a ball player as well. Six errors in one game!

Default Scanning preferences

I find scanning beat up cards more fun than ones in better shape.

How about this T206 Flick with a nail hole and a missing chunk out of its side:

Obviously, I am in the minority on this forum.

I have absolutely no attraction to or appreciation for lesser condition cards, much less beaters.

I would rather continue the search than settle for less than my targeted standards.

The search has almost been as enjoyable as finally attaining those targets and always looking for upgrades just isn't the same.

But you guys enjoy your beaters...I won't get in your way - and you can have all the brussel sprouts too.

I'm right there with you! I have maybe 2 beaters in my collection...but they are whole cards. The MAtty I will likely keep forever as it was my first old card I bought as a kid...and my other...a universal ruth sheet is not a card Im in love with it...but couldn't pass for the price!

Here's a T206 Lenox Cobb for you, Ricky. Make sure to read all 300 posts. The seller will tell you it's worth $50,000 or so and he may offer to fight you (you'll have to pay his airfare), but you'll work something out eventually.

Love this forum.

Beaters tell a story.
Back when one was young, they didn't care about condition. They just wanted the card. You would trade a beeater Mays for 50 nm cards.
The reasons for owning a beater are multiple.

A) often its a filler in trying to complete a set
B) for its own charm
C) its a cheap way to own a hard to buy card
D) I collect a beater typeset- punch holes, tears, scuffs, markings etc. are all different types.
E) They're funny or entertaining
D) There is a story to each beater (how did it get that way?)
E) I know someone who uses them in a rotisserie game
F) A cheap way to build a second set
E) other reasons- add your own here

I doubt anyone would turn down a beater T206 Wagner.

For the price such a Wagner would cost...YES. I would turn it down...

same goes with the '52 Mantle - WAY overpriced* ! imo

Thanks johnny... I agree she is a beauty! While I am still not a fan of beater cards I understand that sometimes having a card with a hole is better than a hole in my collection.

I never used to believe in this philosophy but over the years I have come to realize that some cards are a lot more scarce than I ever imagined.

And it is situations like this where I will make exceptions and and beaters to my collection.

But the Matty is an exception. The only reason it remains in my collection is because it was my "first!"

Mike, though Mr. Waddell is well-loved now, it appears that at one time in the past he was very well-hated.

I also wanted to add this card. I pulled this from a wax pack in 1972. 9 years old then.

Anyway, after December 31 happened, it came off the wall (see the tape) and into a cigar box, with marbles and such. It remains my favorite card from my childhood.

Not sure that is trimming, could be the first Die-Cut prototype.

EDIT: I think I could pretty much post my entire pre-war collection in this thread.

I am resurrecting this thread to show one of my favorite beaters.

(and also because of the other wacky thread on the front page today)

This is as close as I get to a beater card.

I still love it, though.

I was at Spring Training when this thread started so I am glad to see it revived so I can add some of my favorites.

First up is an uber-rare die cut Zeenut:

The second card was found at the National a few years ago. Personally, I believe this was originally part of the Ed Norton collection. Opinions?

The final card I obtained from a fellow Net54 member as part of a Lot purchase. It really appeals to my OBCish sense of humor:
