Default Who can tell me about W502s?

Posted By: Al C.risafulli

Some of you know that about five months or so ago, I decided to start working on a nice W502 set. My goal was to build it in as nice condition as possible, which I thought would be moderately challenging but not impossible, due to the lack of popularity of this set. My impressions were that the 1928 ice cream cards were far more popular and in demand than the 502s, and so I'd be able to build this set with little competition and at decent pricing.

Problem is, in the five months, I've found exactly one card (to add to the three I already had). There are a few examples on eBay at prices I'm not comfortable with, and a few "authentic" or super-low grade examples have popped up now and again, but it just seems like these cards have suddenly disappeared.

Anyone have any insight into this?

TIA,
-Al

I don't think folks fully realize how scarce some sets are. I think I can recall a few small groups of these but not too many. Also, at some point you might think about paying a little more than you thought you might have to but go ahead and pick a few up. I know I have had to do that on occasion...good luck in your quest.

Al,
I feel your pain. I have been working on these for some time. I have been able to pick up a grand total of 8 cards since 6/30/2002.

I think my vision might be skewed, because part of the reason I decided to do the set was because I had run into two or three nice-sized lots of these, all in the scope of about a month. I passed them all by, but then picked up a raw Lazzeri for my HOF set a few weeks later. So when I decided to jump in, I did it having just been exposed to a bunch.

Of course I don't remember where I saw them!

Al,
ALL 1920's sets are very tough to complete. I buy singles as they show up and upgrade later if possible. Complete sets normally sell for a premium price when offered. Condition is normally all over the place as well. Here's my W502 Lazzeri, one of my favorites. Good Luck with your quest.

Very cool Lazzeri. It's the first home run back that I've seen.

Since we are here (talking about them) I don't have a problem with you telling the poster you have some for sale/trade etc. Actually it's appreciated. Blatant/covert threads started as advertising, on the main forum, is what we don't want.....thanks for asking though. regards

I haven't seen that back, either. That's very cool.

Here's my Lazzeri:

I also have a nice Tris Speaker that's currently at SGC. Then I have Highpockets Kelly, Joe Duggan, and that's it.

The one with the Sweetman back is from the Sweetman set, and is not a W502. Not sure about what the blank backs could be, but it doesn't sound like a W502. There are several sets which use the same basic design that the W502s use; I don't know which one came first. 1927 York Caramel, maybe?

David Vargha wrote a great article on the 1928 ice cream cards - Yuengling's, Tharps, Sweetman and Harrington's - for SGC Collector that could help you identify what you have.

PS - the One Baggers are W502s. Looking to find them a new home?
