Default O/T: New to net54 and Pre-War Vintage

Not sure if this is ok to post, so if it isn't, feel free to delete.

Just wanted to introduce myself to the boards, as I hope to be a regular commenter and poster over here.

My name is Anthony K. and I am a newbie to the world of pre-WWII vintage. I have always been enamored by old Goudey, T206's and tobacco cards, but for some reason never had that much of an interest in them, until recently.

I am reading a book about "The Card" or "The Holy Grail" as some call it. Obviously, the book is about the PSA 8 T206 Honus Wagner. And, in the book, it mentioned these very message boards. The more I have read about it, the more intrigued I have been about vintage cards. Plus, a buddy of mine on another board has an AMAZING vintage collection that I drool over regularly.

So, no I have decided to hop into the shallow end of the vintage collector's pool (until I know more about the cards and have a little more cash flow).

A little more information about myself: Grew up in Texas, currently stationed in Germany serving my country in the Army. I am married with one son and I am a HUGE Houston Astros fan. I primarily collect 7 different players, but have slowly been branching into rookies pre-1985 and HOF game used.

I look forward to being on the boards and hope to learn quite a bit about vintage cards from the boards.

Hey Anthony,

Welcome to the board. It's a great place to learn about everything vintage and sometimes a bonus of off-topic spewing of opinions.

Anthony you are certainly welcome. Some of us snap at one another sometimes, if you can ignore that you'll find the rest of the stuff, most of it, is pretty good. There are some deep sources of information here. I was sold on Biggio being the real deal in 1989, he just looked like he loved playing ball. We can even welcome an Astros fan!!

Anthony,

Check in as much as you can. I've been a member for just over a month now and the information that comes out of these experts is extraordinary. My learning curve is expanding by the day...

By the way, what is the title of the book you're reading?

zork-- the book is called "The Card: Subtitle, words, words, blah".

All I remember is the actual title, sorry.

The book is at my house, when I get off in about 10 minutes I will take a look at it and post the ENTIRE title tonight.

Thanks for the welcome everyone

Hey Anthony, this place is a hoot! I knew nothing when I started a few years ago also. Lots of lurking and a few more posts lately than normal and some wheeling and dealing in the Buy/Sell/Trade section. I'm hooked. A lot of the people here know each other offline and there is some nice personalities, sometimes in conflict, and what seem like a bunch of great guys, yours truly included of course!

Anthony,

Welcome aboard. As David said, a great bunch of guys. Almost like family. (Which of course, sometimes means we end every meal in a knock down, drag out, fight. But we're all here for the same reasons.)

It's good to have you aboard Anthony...welcome!

There's a good group of people here. We can get a bit testy and/or ornery at times, but nothing like what you went through in boot camp

As for me, I just retired 11 months ago after 24 years in the Air Force, with two of 'em spent at Patch Barracks in Stuttgart.

zork-- The title of the book is "The Card": Collector's, Con Men and The True Story of History's Most Desired Baseball Card". Almost finished with it and it was QUITE insightful. Kind of makes me happy about what has happened to Mastro recently.

Steve-- Much respect to you for serving 24 years. I am only coming up on two years this month, but intend to do at least 8-10 years. Will make a major decision when we deploy next year on the type of contract I want.

D. Broughman-- My son is only 18 months old, but is already starting to show a penchant for liking baseball cards, as he is always interested in looking at and holding them any time I get them out. I have started a collection for him, of the player he was named after: Hunter Pence. I chose him so my son could have a player to grow up watching playing the game right.

Everyone else-- Thanks for the warm welcome. Hopefully, I should have my first true pre-war vintage on the way soon (a '33 Goudey and a really cheap T206).
