Default Biggest omissions in card issues

Posted By: Scott(runscott)

Any ideas on why certain players were left out of pre-WWI sets? The question of Connie Mack's absence from the t206 set has come up in the past and will probably remain a mystery, but there are others: Christy Mathewson appeared in almost all the caramel sets, but Walter Johnson seemed to be mostly tobacco.

What are the biggest omissions?

Biggest omissions? Here's a partial list:

T206 Jackson, Alexander, Speaker portrait, Wagner batting, Plank pitching

T205/202 Wagner, Plank, Lajoie, Jackson, Alexander, Wood (appears in T202, not T205)

E90-1 Johnson, Alexander, Wood

T3 Wagner, Plank (Plank's absence in T205 and T3 sure indicates that his scarcity in T206 is for the same reason as Wagner's)

Cracker Jack Ruth

M101-4/5 Mathewson

DeLong Ruth, Ott, Dean

34 Goudey Ruth, Ott, Gomez

34-36 Diamond Stars Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Dean

38 Goudey Gehrig, Ott, Grove

39 Play Ball Gehrig, Feller, Grove

40 Play Ball Feller, Grove

41 Play Ball Feller, Grove

Walter Johnson was omitted from some of the "E" card designations like E90-1, E92, E93, E94, E95, E96, E97, E98, E101, E103 etc.....seems odd. The missing '34 Goudey Ruth also seems strange.

Of course, Jackson's name is mentioned on the back of the T207 Henry Butcher card, for what it's worth!

For me, the biggest mystery is why there is no Adolfo Luque in the 1923/24 Billiken set. Any ideas?

As much as I love the Mayo set, it could have been much better. It is missing very early cards of Cy Young, Willie Keeler, John McGraw, Fred Clarke, Hugh Jennings, Jesse Burkett, Joe Kelley, and probably a few others.

It is also missing an early card of George Davis.
