Default Should I submit my Honus E90-2 to SGC?

Posted By: Mike

Hi all,
So, I've had this E90-2 Honus Wagner for about 5 years now, and I have yet to get it graded. My main reason was that it displayed so nicely for the grade. I thought a PSA 1 holder would degrade it. I think it could grade an SGC 20 though. Now, that this card has taken off I would like to get it graded just for the authenticity purpose. Its absolutely real, but most just feel better when its in that holder. My question to all of you is: How much do you suspect this card could bring graded compared to ungraded? I saw a GIA 2.5 On sale online for $4750(whew..)

I'm no expert but I'd imagine a graded e90-2 honus would bring 70-100% more than ungraded...totally worth it if you're planning on selling!

Just one man's opinion...

Pete

Thanks Pete,
I will most likely hold on to it, but I think it's time I got it graded.

Generally speaking the "slabbing" of a card by a reputable company will not increase the value 70%-100%.....if this Wagner were say, $2500 unslabbed, then I would think maybe another 10%-20% more if slabbed. There are a few variables too. If a known auction house, or known "good guy" ebayer, like David Bryan, or Scott Gaynor, were to sell it unslabbed then I think it would be on the low end of my estimate, and maybe even close to equal. On the other hand if someone that is unknown, but legit, were to sell it on ebay then my guess of 10%-20% would be close. Don't expect to get 70%-100% more for a slabbed card. That's crazy, imo....again, these are only my personal observations......later

yes you can slab it for protection, of course you also have to take into account the card will pass through many hands before coming back to you in the slab, so there's always a chance of further damage.

i'd consider putting a "condom" on that wagner, just for the protection alone...if you dont want the "grade" have GAI authenticate it...you can always have it graded by number later if you want....

...are we ok to use the word "condom" here?

Only if we give equal time to condomints and condominiums. But I agree, slab it for protection. Cards are never so bad that they can't get worse.

If your only concern is protection then I suggest a 1" lucite screw down. Cards look mighty impressive in those things.

They put tremendous pressure on the cards and can pile-drive any dirt specks into the card surfaces. I had a really nice 1953 Bowman card that had a small piece of grit driven into it on the white border by a screw-down. There are no divots in baseball cards...

GIA will simply slab it Authentic for me? How much does that run $? Will people think it has been trimmed or something if it is only slabbed "authentic" as opposed to a 1 or 2?

why authentic and not ga 1?
I wouldn't think it was trimmed if I saw it as authentic, but I'd personally rather have it designated a grade.

I would go for sgc 10.

Mike, I bought this card in a PSA 1 last year for about $1475. I like mine better than yours though, it looks like a mint card but with one big wrinkle. I'm hoping to regrade it as a PSA 8 (WR)..lol. But seriously, your picture is more affected than mine due to the paper loss, which could affect what someone would pay.

possibly. I don't know, I don't find the paper loss too offensive my self. It probably would grade a 1 like you say. It's complete and it displays great in person. Nice vibrant colors. My original plan was to get a portrait card of each HOFer.. that was tricky when it came to Honus.. When I saw this card, I knew it was the one I needed to get. I had to jump through a few hoops to get it, but am glad I did. It's really tough.
