Default Negro League team "A"

1938 West NL All Star team

I was able to determine all the teams in this photo but one. Back row, fifth from R.Any idea what team this is. "A" on the jersey and cap? (There is already a team with an "Atlanta" jersey.) Thanks, Steve

Teams noted thusfar,
American Giants (Chi)
Jacksonville Red Caps
Memphis Red Sox
KC Monarchs
Atlanta Black Crackers
Birmingham Black Barons
Indy ABC's

It doesn't fit the occasion but the A looks similar to the Almendares logo.

The teams in the West that year was the KC Monarchs, Memphis Red Sox, Atlanta Black Crackers, Chicago American Giants, Indianapolis ABC's Jacksonville Red Caps and Birmingham Black Barons. My educated guess would be that the "A" on the jersey is the previous years Atlanta uniform, the southern teams in particular used obsolete uniforms mixed with new ones on their teams and simply used them till they wore out. Another guess could be one of the old ABC's uniforms, I think I remember seeing them use a large A many years before 1938, but my guess would be it is Atlanta.

Gary, can you recommend any good photographic reference (besides the internet) for Negro League research? I've got some of the standard biographical and written reference, but would love to add to the photographic reference. Thanks!

A good start would be these:
The Negro Baseball Leagues: A Photographic History by Phil Dixon
Pictorial Negro League Legends by Robert Retort
The Negro Leagues Book by SABR
When The Game Was Black and White by Chadwick

I compile reference from other smaller books about players or teams which often have good, little known photos in them. Sometimes you can get decent reference from the Afro-American online archives, but the photo quality can be real bad. Basicly I just keep my eyes open for any book on the negro leagues and copy photos I think I might need for my projects. Hope this helps and if you need something specific I'll try to be of help.

Appreciate the help so far... There are four Indy ABC's pictured, in a different uni.

Upon furthur inspecton, I believe there is a baseball embroidered inside the "A".
