They didn't need to curse to be funny. Back then you could still make a joke about someone and they wouldn't be up in arms.

Rickles and Bob Newhart are best friends. They go on vacation with their wives and Newhart was involved with introducting Rickles to Rickles' future wife.

I recorded the audio of a bunch of those from the TV onto some long-gone reel-to-reel tapes, so you're not THAT old.

I doubt he'd get away with the racial jokes nowadays. I doubt many young people would even understand the train porter joke though.
