Another hit to my 1952 Bowman Small set described as a Poor condition filler (my kind of card)! I picked it up on eBay along with the Tarkenton RC, but Y.A. went for a little "bath" LOL! Tossed Y.A. in the kitchen sink, wiped him off with a dish rag, then dried him out between paper towels (your typical soak). Before pic on the left, after pic on the right with no improvement on the reverse. I paid 5.8% NM value for this card. I didn't notice the card was trimmed or just suffered from some weird factory cut until after Y.A. got cleaned up. Also the crease in the upper left is not noticed until after all the dirt was washed off. I thought the stain on the pennant was gum or wax but it wouldn't rub off and ended up being more dirt.

Never washed a card before. That did clean up pretty well.

I haven't been on the boards too much in the past few weeks. It was nice to get back to looking through threads and see all these pickups from everyone that I hadn't seen before.

I picked this card up a month ago at one of our local shows from Matt. I posted about it on my blog, but apparently forgot to show it in here.

The Large version of this is the #3 card on my "want" list. I didn't have this one either and was so excited to get it.

I also picked up the Kinnick for my All-American set. I posted it in that thread. Matt told me that he'd had it since he was young, but had picked up an upgrade. I really like knowing a little history about the particular card. It was actually mentioned a few posts ago about how some kid in the 50s probably had the card. I've thought quite often lately that it would be really cool if the cards could talk. Where have they been? How did they get into the shape that they are in?

I did pick up three other commons from Matt, nothing really worth posting, though. Just cards for my WVU collection. If you're interested, you can read the post here.

I picked this up today at my LCS. I did think it was a 1948 and not a 1949, though. I definitely learned a vintage lesson today. I may have slightly overpaid, but it is what it is. Still happy with the pickup.

Still a very nice card! The 1949 cards can definitely fool you if you're not careful. When I was putting together the 48 and 49 Leaf sets I found out several times that I had 48s in my 49 binder and vice versa. Usually when I picked up lots on ebay and didn't look closely at the cards.

Besides looking at the copyright on the back, if the card stock is white you know its a 48. Otherwise it could be a 48 or 49 as Leaf appears to have finished up their 48 run with gray card stock and then carried that stock into their 49 set. All the cards in the 49 set have gray stock.

No mail yesterday MLK day. But my mailbox was STUFFED today as I continue to work on my early Bowman sets:)
I added the three 1950 Bowman cards the most "expensive" is Charley Trippi NM "value" $70 only eight more to go!
Four of the five '48 Bowmans are short prints (divisible by 3) NM "value" $100 each. #84 Crisler was in an SGC "A" holder Buy It Now was $12 OBO. Seller took my $8 offer shipped it free. I couldn't tell exactly what was wrong with the card until I cracked it out, and obviously it's trimmed. Still glad to get this card and need just six more to complete my set!

I was really excited to find this on eBay for less that $2 shipped once I "found out" about it. The only vintage CFL card that I know of picturing a former Mountaineer.

Already posted these first 2 when I bought them raw. Just got them back from PSA. Was hoping for 8's or 9's, but these grades still aren't too bad. Bryant is pop 1, with 4 higher. Hannah is pop 1, 3 higher.

I'd always heard this card was hard to find nice because it was the last card in the set and subject to greater wear and tear for those orderly people who kept their cards stacked in order secured with rubber bands. And this is his earliest card.

That's a great example of the Thorpe card and it presents so nicely in the SGC holder.

I love that Thorpe, it's a beauty. I love the SGC holders and am thinking of doing a set registry for my 1955 All Americans as well. It will never be a top graded set, but just something to do for fun. I live in Fort Worth and for about a year, Beckett was setting up at shows. We could drop cards for grading and they'd bring them back to the next show. For that reason, I had them grade my Thorpe.

Nice pick up! My first one was Ben Ciccone. Amazing to think they used to drop kick FGs and PATs (no holder). I think Dutch Clark was the last of the drop kickers although Strong himself kicked as late as 47! I'm guessing he abandoned the drop kick when the shape of the ball changed..... And too bad Chicle couldn't have squeezed in some mention of the Sneakers game - guy was basically the MVP of the previous season's championship game and they couldn't manage to make some mention of it on his football card :mad:

The funny thing is this guy and I were corresponding for probably a year about NY Giants history when we realized we lived in the same town - and now he's my yoga teacher too - he's a research scientist by day, yoga teacher by night, Giants fan full time.

Flutie drop kick, it's soooooo GOOD! Look at that score too, down by 6 in the 4th quarter. It wasn't a blowout, but if memory serves it was the last game of the regular season. Love it, thanks Jeff.

What they don't show in this clip is Belichick jumping around with a big smile on his face. He obviously enjoyed the moment too.

Nice pick ups Mike! Great condition. With Blood having no cards, a matchbook is on my want list too. Is the Hinkle a bobtail? Does that bother you? Seems like they can be more affordable that way.
