Mantle variation?
Hi Guys:
Have you seen lot # 1323 in the latest REA auction? https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=47234 Shows the rarer 62 Auravision record with the back showing 63 stats that are on the back of the easier 64 pose. The small photo on the back is also different from the one on the back of 62 version. Seems to be a hybrid between the two versions. Cool in my eyes. |
Quote:
I also think it is pretty cool. It does appear to be a hybrid between the two versions. However, the small photo on the back seems to be the same as on my '62 version, just slightly different cropping. |

The write-up says "The record features a paper overlay on the reverse displaying Mantle's statistics through the 1963 season." This suggests that it isn't so much a variation as it is a glued together mash up.

I've heard about this "variation" before but never seen a picture before. Not sure I'd consider it a variation, but it is an interesting piece.
Nice 60 Venezuelan Mike :) |
Looking at the rest of the lot, there is a similar Spahn as well as a Spahn with a blank back "sticker".
They all appear to me to be professionally done. Must have come out of the company files. Love that kind of stuff. I went to the Xograph office in NYC while in college back in the early 70's. I was doing a research paper and asked and got some of the Topps 3-D's from their files. Wish I still had them!! |

Has anyone seen the 1964 Mantle bazooka stamp full panel in eBay ? It's a PSA 5??? It is seperate into two pieces. How does this get a grade?
|
And the rest ???
Quote:
...and regarding the rest of the cards in the submission , were you also surprised by those grades ? I've been told that at least "three sets of eyes look at the final graded product before a card is registered and shipped ?..... .. |
Nice cards Robert

When I see grades like this, I often wonder, (as I would) if you thought, damn, I should have sent more in? Nice card, BTW. |
mantle
Only card submitted. Over the years I have submitted many cards that I thought were 8s only to get a 6. So I guess it all evens out in the end. I recently submitted a 1951 Bowman Ford that was a sgc 55 to BVG because I thought it was a sure fire 5.5 and Beckett is easy right? Came back as altered although I personally doubt it.
I am not anti-grading, just realistic about its limitations. Mistakes, judgment calls, etc. are all part of it. PSAs Mona Lisa is the Gretzky Wagner and it is pretty obvious the screwed that up. |
64 bazooka mantle
The stamp panel split in half...graded by psa is ridiculous
Whats more ridiculous is the current bid |

This isn't a pick up yet, but I was hoping someone here could tell me about this and it's potential value? There may be a whole case of them?
These are available in an Estate Sale I am going to tomorrow morning. I am posting a different thread on the sale and other items in it, so you may see this twice. Thanks in advance, Chris |
Chris, the picture contains issue one and two of the magazine. They were released in 1991 and 1992. It looks like you can pick them up for less than five dollars shipped from eBay--there is one at .99 with free shipping right now.

1962 with a 1964 overlay. Don't pull up my prior quotes please about how I was getting this one. Recently popped up on eBay, the price was right, and I was anxious to see it in person and examine it.

Also, and more importantly, unless it's just a bad photo, I'd say you won't get a very high grade for the cut out Mantle. He's missing the top of his head/hat. |

I inspected it in person. I believe it was done by the factory as the bank cover sheet appears to have been professionally mounted on. There isn't a single bubble or anything to suggest it was attached as an afterthought. In a stupid rookie move, I took it out of the toploader it was in while I was walking and inadvertently bumped a wall with it, putting a one centimeter gash in it. It's very frustrating but it doesn't look all that bad, and, surprisingly, despite going through both the record and the attached back, it did not cause the back to separate at all. So I learned from it at least. Still annoyed but it will be secure moving forward. |

As to the size difference... i have no idea what that is about. The photo image is 7 -1/2" x 9- 1/2" which looks to be the same or similar to yours, so it could have been handout smaller i guess? Also, yours looks much cleaner, almost white, compared to the beige stock example i have. |

I was thinking this was the same one that sold in the recent auction and that the winner was turning around and selling it off. However, I just checked to see if any of the others in the auction group were also listed on eBay and didn't see them in completed listings. So, maybe there are two of them out there. Very sorry to hear about the gash. I know how sickening that is. |
Quote:
The photo image on mine is the exact same size as yours: 7-1/2" by 9-1/2". Mine is actually on a kind of beige stock and not white. I think that's an artifice of the camera. I should scan it to see if it scans more "life like." I took it out of its sheet protector, being careful not to walk around near any walls with it (wink, wink Chris), and found that the paper stock is not a slick photographic stock, but more of a thick, rough paper stock with an almost cardboard feel to it, but not nearly thick enough to be cardboard. |

1951 Bowman followed by 1952 Topps. Just like in real life, his rookie card followed by a second year card. ;) Sweet stuff for breakfast. Great pick-ups gents!

I have 2 beautiful 59 mantles incoming.
I would love to post pics here but I don't know how. If anyone can tell me I would appreciate it. |

1. If you have a flickr (or the like) account you can copy and paste the proper link(s) from there and your cards will appear. 2. If you have jpg's or what not on your computer, when you go to post, click on the paper clip icon and a 'manage attachments' window will come up. From there, locate the file on your computer and upload it. Then go back to where you were and when you click on the paper clip now, your file will appear under it. Just select it and it will appear in your post. With number 2, sometimes the file will be too big to upload, so you'll have to go back into photoshop or whatever and reduce the size of the file. You want it to be (I believe) at most around 1MB or slightly larger. |
Ok I'll try. I don't know what a jpg is, but I would like to show off my new additions.
I can build a house, but I can not do much on a computer. I may have to just describe #s 10 and 564. Quote:

Re the 56 Mantle, I thought the use of certs starting in 0 was a thing of the ancient past?

I purchased this 1958 Mantle in 1966 from a Wholesale Cards mail order catalog for 75 cents. My plan was to save up my money and purchase a 1952 Mantle which they sold for $1.00. My father found out I spent 75 cents for one card and told me that was outrageous and not to do that again. Unfortunately I obeyed him and do not have a 52 Mantle. I reminded my father of this years later and showed him the value of these cards. He had nothing to say.

Okay, took a while but I can finally share the best centered 1951 Mick I ever found, and focused, too. Had been hoping to get these three cards centered for many years, as they are notorious for poor centering. Need a new hobby goal now, lol.

Been buying more Mantles with my COMC profits while waiting for PSA to grade the 40 or so I have there (in a bulk submission of 136 cards).

Is that a record above? The Mantle image on it, with nothing but clouds above him, is really striking.
|
Yes, it has "33 1/3rd" at the top left corner. They made a set of baseball players under the Columbia Auravision label. Here's the back:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/dzgAA...FFQ/s-l800.jpg You would punch out the hold in the center and it would play on the vinyl side (Mantle's picture). You can see the threads reflecting at the top of the front picture. |

Wow...sweet centered Mantles. I'm envious. It sucks that the PSA paper flip on the 52 would grade a 1 :) lol |
