Caveat emptor on '53 PSA 9. Seller does not sell baseball cards and has some negatives. No thanks.

if legit, is that card really worth $350,000 or close to it? |
100% is only in the past year. If you look at the "All Feedbacks" tab and go back to the early ones, there are a few that are sketchy and have responses.
Cert # checks out with having the hologram flip front and reverse barcode, plus scans aren't stolen from an auctionhouse. AHs don't photographs fingers in with the cards... As to value, PSA SMR is $235,000 but who knows with a high end card like this and only 2 higher. |
Just letting y'all know:
I'm selling several of my PSA-7 & 8 Mantles on the 'bay this week. Ends Wednesday, 2/28. |

VERY excited to have picked this up in Goodwin last night. Centering is perfect, and I don't know that I've ever seen better registration on any '53 Bowman card, Mantle or otherwise. I paid high for it but hopefully it will be worth it once I get the card in-hand. My '53 set had stalled because I could never find a Mantle that I liked...now I can start it up again!

Rare Mickey Mantle baseball cards pleasure reading ...
1 Attachment(s)
Since the first 3 chapters of my book on immediate post-war regionals, Never Cheaper By the Dozen, concerns a trio of important Commerce Comet items, I thought this might interest some of you Mickey Mantle collectors.
My book is available as an E-book on a CD, which I sell via mail order. However, it is also available as a digital download. If you go to Amazon's web site (SEE LINK BELOW), my book listing offers a free "Look Inside", where you'll find the table of contents, introduction, and the first two chapters. Chapter 1 involves a mint condition 1962 JELL-O Apple Flavor complete unfolded box, with Mickey Mantle as the free prize card. Since purchasing this rare gem 30 years ago, I've not come across anther Mick like it. It may be unique. Chapter 2 covers the gorgeous and majestic 1960 Post Cereal Mantle. Free pleasure reading with lots of information, stories, memories, and insight. Naturally, should you decide to purchase the 478-page E-book on a CD, I will service you swiftly, and if you prefer the Amazon digital download version, it's a snap. Best regards to all.:) --- Brian Powell Never Cheaper by the Dozen. |
Glad you are on Amazon as well now. Fantastic book Brian. My best to you and your family and a wonderful Easter!

Nice run of postcards and matchbooks Ben! It looks like you are missing just one matchbook (likely two but haven't confirmed the remaining one exists) and one postcard :). Are the postcards that you are showing duplicates of variations or just extras? And any postmark on the black one? I've been trying to confirm the date but mine isn't postmarked.
|
Quote:
i know i am missing the Holiday feeling Joplin matchbook...but i didn't count that one since Mantle isn't mentioned. And i do have the other tint on the one ear. There were two more a light beige and brown after Mantle left from what i gather as well. If you know of another please share :) Thanks Irv! |
For postcards, there is also a generic white one featuring a woman by the pool. I'm not sure about the date but I did find the same one from another Holiday Inn that has a postmark on it from the 1960s. I think there is a chance your unpostmarked one was produced in the 1960s but still trying to confirm.
For matchbooks, there is a black one featuring a sign--it looks just like the generic postcard you pictured. The back mentions something about a computer, so likely from after Mantle's involvement. The white Holiday Feeling one was the one I was speculating about--haven't seen one but assumed it existed. I need one if you ever come across one--they are likely way after Mantle's involvement but I'm a completionist and they are never more than a couple dollars. I don't think I've seen the brown or beige but will have to keep an eye out for them. It's an awesome collection. |

Nice pickups! The Transogram boxes are getting much more difficult to find with PSA now grading the disassembled ones.

Picked up a tough oddball today. 64 Rawlings Glove Box HC. |
Thanks, fellas. Never seen that Rawlings before; learn something new every day— especially about collecting The Mick.
Those Venezuelans are tough; I can feel them calling me one day, down the line. I did not think I could get close to the high of finding the 51B and the 57T centered. Yet I was pretty pumped about this signed 1957; my expectations were managed in terms of a signed '57— between the card's usual focus and centering issues, and then Mick's tendency to sign the card vertically, across his body from head to toe. Was surprised to see a nice sig, horizontally placed, on a card with a crisp image. https://www.collectorfocus.com/image...7-topps-mantle https://www.collectorfocus.com/image...7-topps-mantle |
Nice cards Matt. Especially the signed 59 and 65. I'm sorry I didn't see them first.

Here's a good look at one of the three Gem Mint 52 Mantle's, this one has a slight tilt.

Grabbed three new ones (to me) for my Mantle PSA collection at the Small Traditions auction last night. Put in some bids before going to bed and they held up. Bid on about 7 other auctions that weren't highest, but mostly 2nd place.
http://www.smalltraditions.com/ItemI...7579a_med.jpeg http://www.smalltraditions.com/ItemI...7414a_med.jpeg http://www.smalltraditions.com/ItemI...7415a_med.jpeg Seems like the 1960 Nu-Cards are much rarer than the 1961s, but they didn't cost much. 1960 #22 PSA POP of 72. 1961 #422 POP of 308. 1960 #50 POP of 60. 1961 #450 POP of 284. For $80 for both including BP, not too shabby. And SmallTraditions shipping/insurance was very reasonable. |
The 1960 ones are definitely rarer and, at least in my mind, much cooler. Great pickups. It was a fun auction to watch. Surprised to see some of the prices.
|
Picked up this sweet Mantle starting lineup figure in a charity shop. New in the box for $7, so how could I say no.

After being out of vintage card collecting for awhile and focusing on autos, I'm thrilled to now have this. I almost got one a few years ago when they were going for half what they are now, but I'm very happy with this example especially for the grade.

Trying to complete a mid-grade 50s base Mantle run. Its going to take a while for some of the early 50s cards but ambition is good, right? Happy to add this 1959 Topps example. Great color and centering.

Picked up a new version of the Holiday Inn matchbook cover with Mantle looking left over his shoulder. The latest pick-up is the one in the center. It is a much darker brown than the other brown ones. It is also slightly smaller at 4.9 mm versus 5.1 mm for the second from the top and 5 mm for the other three. If anyone has one that is different from the five I've posted, I would appreciate hearing about it. It helps to know what I need to be on the look out for. :)
|
They look great all together like that. That is all I have of him facing that direction. I have three variations facing the other direction--one with a white background around his face, one with an off white background, and one with blue matches. Then, although not an interest to you as I know its not in your collecting realm, four generic ones that may likely postdate his ownership a bit.

Nice pickup Mike. Your full facing right green/black is beautiful!
I had the facing left with light brown but not the right. The smaller size is interesting... no signs of trimming? Is the text the same size? Feel free to update this "playing years" list if you have or know of any others :) |
Ben, thanks for posting the list of different match book covers. I have four of the Country Cookin' that you have listed ... looks like I need four more. I only have one of the Yoo-Hoo covers but was aware of the other variations.

Picked up another rare one off the Master Set Registry. Used the 10% off coupon to save some bucks. |
Great card John and you got that one for a terrific price. The 1960s are incredibly rare and, for some reason, there just happens to be a few for sale now--I looked for roughly two years before purchasing my first one and didn't see a single one for sale during that time.
|
Yeah, may be the definition of POOR, but the image is pretty clear and there's no paper loss on the back.
|
It's awesome you were able to pick that one up. But, on a side note, don't you find it pretty funny that a card graded a 1 would get a qualifier? You'd think if a card was labeled a single step higher than 'authentic,' the full gamut of cardboard-based problems would simply be implied. And if the rule of thumb is that a card with a qualifier lowers the 'perceived grade' by 2 points, you now have a card graded a -1. :D
|
PSA Auths used to count as 0.5 points in the standings, but AUTH, 1(Q), 1, and 2(Q) all count as PSA 1 for the set registry based on changes they made last year. Oddly enough, FAIR 1.5(Q) is still worth 1.5. 3(Q) now is worth 2 points, while 4 and up with qualifiers equal a two-grade drop.

I rarely send cards in for grading--not because of any thoughts regarding the process, but rather because hobby funds are limited. Well, I bit the bullet and sent these in. Unfortunately, when doing so, I accidentally provided the company the wrong address. They were sent there and signed for by the new tenant, who never contacted me. Two weeks later, I discovery my mistake. Fortunately, the landlord put me in touch with the tenant and I was able to retrieve them today. Photo bucket won't let me share teh photos, but was fortunate to get the following:
1. 1961 Post Cereal Panel - Skowkron/Richardon/Mantle/Klubek - PSA 6 2. 1962 Life Magazine - Mantle/Maris panel w/ Tor. Sub Tab - PSA A 3. 1968 Country Cookin - Kneeling - PSA 4 Also grabbed these as the price was right and I love the premium photo: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/3tgAA...3L/s-l1600.jpg |

This isn't a new pickup as I bought it in 2016. But it's my favorite Mickey item. Had these as a kid in North Jersey. Loved going to the soda fountain/cigarette/candy store near my house and flipping through them. Lot's of nostalgia for me in stuff like this.

Nice stuff guys; I grabbed three cards from the Small Traditions auction last night: PSA graded 1953-55 Dormand VG-EX, 1955-57 Yankees photo pack VG, and Holiday Inn matchbook EX. Added them to my Master Set registry and moved up from #36 to #33. Still waiting on my submission with Bobby on the main page, and working on another bulk submission with 18 Mantles so far, probably going to be close to 30 once I get them all in and send it out.

I pulled the mag and saw that the two centerfold color pics are courtesy of Topps.
