The Otsego Baseball Team, owned by a millionaire Tom Stephens, went on to win the state championship in Ypsilanti. A member of that squad was Ty Cobb, the "Georgia Peach," and the most feared professional player who ever played Major League baseball for the Detroit Tigers.
Rumors have it that Cobb only played in one ball game for the Otsegos but he was paid a hefty sum of $1,000 for the game. At that time Cobb drew a salary of only $2,250 with the Tigers, so his trip to Gaylord was worth it. Other major league players who played once in awhile for their team was Killian (kneeling next to manager), Donlin (first row on left), and Goulait (7th player back row). Mullin, Killian, and Bowerman have been known to play with the team at times to as the millionaire lumberman didn't like losing. These games occurred between 1912-1914. Lapeer was one of the opposing teams they faced, in many rivalry series. Rumorville has it that Walter Johnson was offered 1500.00 to pitch in the final game, but he did not play. It was common for pro players to be paid money to play in small hometown games. If not for hometown newspaper articles or photos, many of these stories would be lost in time. This is a RPPC which I recently acquired from a longtime board member who decided to pass the torch after 37 years of owning it which I'm thankful for. Would love to find a Lapeer RPPC to go along with this one. |
JC - very, VERY cool Cobb PC!!! Thanks for the write-up to help give context as to why he’d be pictured with an amateur team.
|
awesome piece JC, love that cobb playing amateur ball was not undocumented by a beautiful post card.

Thanks guys as I think these RPPCs don't get the love they deserve. Here is another one. I used the great write up that Brockleman Auctions did on it.
The featured item in this lot is RPPC of a composite photograph of the 1916 Colonial Baseball Club of New Haven, Connecticut. Featured at the top center of the composite is Ty Cobb, who joined the team in August of 1916. Later in the season, this semi-pro team would play both of the League Champions, defeating Brooklyn 4 to 1 on Sept 10, 1916 and tying the Boston Red Sox 3 to 3 on October 15, 1916(a game in which Babe Ruth pitched). At this time in his career Cobb was playing first base and had eight assist's in the game versus the Red Sox! During the course of the 1916 season, the Colonials, made up mostly of college stars player several of the American and National League teams. Now that we have given a brief history of Cobb and the Colonials, it's time to take a look at the rarity of the piece. Longtime collector and auctioneer Lew Lipset has only seen and offered two of these in his long time in the hobby. An internet search revealed no others of this composite being offered for sale or displayed online. Perhaps there are others, but at this time, only two can be confirmed! The one offered here is from his 2008 Auction, where it was sold with the companion postcard of the game played Sept 10, 1916 against the Brooklyn club. |

John, I saw that Wagner vignette at auction and thought it was fantastic. I don't know much about it, but I love the image. And I can just tell it's one of those cards that looks even better in-hand. I love it. Congrats.

Thanks Orlando. I am the same. My knowledge is limited on this one too. I know there are others with different players. I liked the look of the PC and the image. of course Honus is one of my favorites so that doesn’t hurt Appreciate your comments. Jon Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Nothing earth-shattering, but someone wrote on the back of this Cal., Newport. I like to think it is from Newport Beach, but no way to prove anything. I think the one player's uniform says E. McGuire on it, probably a company team. Not much to go on for figuring out who the two dudes were, but a cool image and not much of a hit on the pocketbook. You don't see a whole bunch of early Southern California baseball stuff, if this is from Newport Beach.

Erick, love the Paige as I should have jumped on that. I think it's from his rookie year and with an auto! How can you go wrong. Those two 1922 Unc cards aren't bad either 😉

Thanks Adam, that's a cool card there!

I always thought it was interesting that Satchel Paige autographed with two “Ls” (i.e., “Satchell”) early in his career and changed over to one ”L” (i.e., “Satchel”) later. Looks like yours has two “Ls”.

I picked this up recently, and have been wracking my brain trying to figure out what team this is. I hate going to you guys to figure things out, but after much searching I still can't figure this out. So many of the players look like someone I should know, but I just can't find a "for sure" answer. In the memorabilia forum, I had one response that the guy in the back row left looked like Frank Doyle, but the uniforms to me do not look like Roanoke. Also, what are the items the two players with the dogs have that are resting on their legs and under their arms? Any thoughts? Any help is much appreciated.
|
Am not getting a glimmer of recognition from any of the faces. Cool postcard nonetheless. My guess, and it's only a guess, is that the mystery items are gun sleeves. The guy in the center looks like he could bench press Scott Brockelman. :)

They used those sleeves to carry bats.

This is from LOTG, it was listed as a "San Bernardino" player. I've not found any uniforms to compare, but the only semi-pro team from that era was the 1913 San Bernardino Kittens. However, my guess, based on the "SB" surrounded by a large "S" on uniform, and the Star on the hat, is that if this is a San Bernardino team, they would be called the "Stars," or something like that. I've read that baseball was being played in San Bernardino since 1899 when San Bernardino was in the Southern California League, so who knows. Heck, I just recently found out that Walter Johnson started pitching here in Orange County when he was a teen. For so small an amount of memorabilia, Southern California was way more into baseball than I knew.
Edited to add: This is definitely not the Kittens, once I decided to use my head, I did some really slick detective work. I read what is printed on the back of the card. The date, Feb. 22, 1910. Brilliant work on my part. |

Been awhile since I got t post in this thread, a really long while...feels good. I also get to be the first post of new year? What could be better...
I got my first card today of 2018 and the second time I have owned this exact example which was difficult to replace. I HAD to trade it for something else and it found its way back to me and showed up today. 1907 FP Burke Detroit PC, one of Cobb's earlier images and I love the emblem in the background. It comes in both black and blue and I far prefer the tough black variation. Also, its unused with just a simple corner crease as it returns in to my top 10 favorite cards. |
Nice Steven, Love that tiger!
Leon: Great Paige PC! |

Also, I let Orly know you didn't want anything to do with postcards and that you don't even want to see a Cobb Pc if one becomes available...heh. Happy New Year! |

I picked this postcard up awhile back. It's a 1908 Krieg & Halton team postcard. This was a semi-pro team that was based in Alameda, CA. What makes it pretty cool is it was sent by team owner Joe Krieg's wife Agnes.

Those were made by Jim Rowe in the 1970-80s using Burke/Brace negatives. They do not have much value. A couple bucks each.

1910 Portland Beavers
2 Attachment(s)
The 1910 Portland Beavers individual player postcards series are right up there for me. Here are a few, including one of my all-time favorite RPPCs and favorite players, Sylveanus Augustus Gregg.
Gregg had an incredible year as the ace of the 1910 PCL champion Beavers, en route to three 20 win seasons in his first three years with the Cleveland Naps. If anyone has any from this series available for sale or trade, I'm all ears!;) |
Dave - those are just awesome!! Thanks for sharing!

Leon's Rapid City Collegiate RPPC inspired me to pull out a handful of Bloomer Girls cards to post.
I'd guess that there are no surviving examples of the "College Bloomer Girls" posters pictured in the bar , but man, I'd love to see that thing in its full color-litho glory. Same for the Western Bloomer Girls truck. |

Thanks, Dan and Jeff. Amazingly, found the postcard on Ebay (along with a second postcard sent to Nuf Ced - both auctioned together in a lot). The second postcard was sent to McGreevey from an individual named Joe Burns, a known/documented member of the Royal Rooters. That postcard, sent from Hot Springs in March, 1917, also contains some baseball content. Burns writes that "the Sox are looking fine".
