The King of Clout...1923
1 Attachment(s)
Obviously one of my favorite acquisitions over the last decade. TYPE I.
Also of note. This exact photo was one of several from my collection that author Harvey Frommer used in his splendid 2008 book entitled: "Remembering Yankee Stadium" Harvey deemed this one worthy of a full page :) Attachment 11490 |
That photo's OK, I guess. If you like mind-blowingly amazing things.
|
Yeah man...the Babe is about to unleash hell. One of the best photos EVER of the Sultan. Just goes to show you, a photo does not have to be taken by a Conlon, Thompson, Bain or Burke to be great. This is also evident in your countless snapshots Jimmy. Very cool stuff...one of the best collectons I have seen, truly.

The past decade, I focused a lot on early pennants. Here are a few of my favorites...

Mark...I am speachless...I'm without speach. I thought I had seen the best your collection has to offer. Clearly...I was wrong...WOW.

I was so focused on photos the last several years, I really missed the boat on pennants and pins. When I see stuff like this, I could just kick myself. Anyway, terrific stuff Mark. |
Thanks Mike and Jimmy...
There's a good news/bad news scenario with early pennants. Bad news is that most of the great/oversized ones are mired in advanced collections (and aren't going anywhere for some time). There's been a sharp drop-off in recent years, of quality pennants being available. Where there used to be a dozen or so available in every Lelands, Mastro or Hunts Catalog, now there might be 1 or 2. The good news is that when they do come available, prices are currently down (due to the crappy ecomomy). So it's an ideal time to pounce, if you see one you like that comes available. When you search ebay with the word "pennant" you'll see 98% crap (new mass produced stuff). So I always check off the search by "highest price first" criteria. I also used to do well searching by the word "penant". Lots of people mis-spell it, and some really good ones used to fall under the radar. Some people call them flags or banners as well, so it sometimes helps to search those words. |
Not only is this one of the most famous images of the "Mick"

This is perhaps my favorite post-war photo.
I also feel that in my opinion, this tremendous photograph of Koufax is his definitive image... Vintage original TYPE I photo of Koufax as he dominated the Yankees in game 1 of the 1963 series, and a 1964 signed companion piece card. Wow Jimmy! That truly is an iconic Koufax image.... almost looks like a contortionist in his delivery. What an epic combo!
Here's a favorite photo in my collection. I thought it was cool to see Conlon's comments on the reverse, written in his hand. Now, Jimmy's post has inspired me to find Matty's 1940 Playball Card, to make it complete (the card pictured below is not mine...) |
GREAT photo, Mark. I've always loved that shot.

Just kidding... your response to the inquiry about the other Conlon of Matty (that you painted) was so eloquent, I wanted to hear it again. That other image is much nicer... Conlon even noted on the back of this one that Matty is looking old and weathered! |
You shouldn't tempt me, I love talking about this stuff. Especially when people want to listen!
But seriously, the other shot of him probably only seems nicer because there's much more of a range in the value scale. And of course, having the whole torso doesn't either. If this one had his upper body, it would be just as sweet. I feel like this is the kind of portrait shot I would make into a 9"x12" or something. An interestingly enough, the image dates from 1912, only a year after the other one was shot. I guess he seemed much older for Conlon to write that... |
A couple of items from my minor league official game ball collection I'm especially proud of:
Probably the pride of my collection, a 1939 Pacific Coast League ball. http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/7614/img3023a.th.jpg And one with a story, a 1962 Three-I League ball, Ken Blackman, President: http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/627...gueball.th.jpg Except Ken Blackman was never president of the Three-I League. Blackman had signed on as president after the 1961 season, but the league folded. I don't know how many of these balls even exist. And one more, a Warren Giles National League ball with Western International League stamped on the side. Robert B. Abel was president of the WIL from 1946-1952, and Giles started his tenure in 1951, so this is either a '51 or '52 vintage. (I need a better picture, the stamping is somewhat faded but the glare in the photo makes it appear worse than it is.) http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/8971/img2983e.th.jpg |

Inverted Mantles
2 Attachment(s)
Wow Carlton!
Nice memory.... What are the odds? I am certain that the containers you photographed were for Inverted Mantles, some were short and fat and some were long and skinny. It is amazing to me how these mantle companies could apparently cater to individual sectors of business. I would imagine these things are fairly rare. If you think about it, why would anyone save a mantle container. You open it up take out the mantle and chunk the box in the trash.... I do see several on ebay, but they are newer and display the company logo without any great graphics. Thanks again Carlton, |
